Had a 3.2 Boxster S for the Afternoon yesterday

Recommended Posts

My misses's cousin works for a car leasing company and has just gone off to Spain for 4 days. He's let me drive several motors that he's shifted over the last few months including a M3 CSL and I just missed out going for a spin in a 360 Modena.

But on Saturday he said that I could use the Boxster hes been driving for the last few weeks as long as I park it at in his drive and post the keys when I was finished with it.

With key in hand and a full tank of premium I wondered if everything old Tiff says about the beloved Boxster was true.

I must admit that I really wasn't impressed with it at all. Quite quick, don't get me wrong. But the damn thing just felt like it wanted to leave the road all the time.

It felt plastic, light and the bloody engine note whining in my ear really pissed me off, you could liken it to a charger in your ear all the time or a noisy power steering pump.

I dropped the clutch on an empty industrial estate and red lined the thing all the way up to red in third and was doing 115ish and thought - ummm that was okayish.

I wasn't expecting supercar performance but hey I wouldn't spend all of 30k on one, not in a million years.

Final thought, with the car safe back on the drive and no arse end antics that went wrong, its not my cup of tea. It will out perform our VR's no worries but it didn?t sound as good, didn't feel like a drivers car and I looked like the only gay in the village!

I used to drive an E46 M3, and considered chopping it in for a Boxster - until I drove one!

Don't get me wrong, personally I think they are a masterful piece of engineering, the one I drove stuck like glue, gave loads of feedback from each corner, and generally felt superb through the twisty stuff. And they're no slouch either.

Where it fell down was (like you say) the plastic-y feel. Urrrgggghhh. There was no fecking was I was handing over £40k of my hard earned for something that felt like the interior came out of a kinder egg....and with a nasty cheap roof mechanism. Just didn't feel like it was worth the money.

I got back in the M3, stuck the TV on and thought.....you can keep your Porsche badge!

But those days are distant memories now....I pick up my first VR6 tomorrow...I've had a G60 Corrado and a MK11 16v Golf - but I'm looking forward to the blast from Newcastle to London...... :P

I didn't think the Interior was bad at all, my parents have a TT Roadster, and Audi do tend to build their cars well.

The Boxster was definitely a step up in terms of quality - i would definitely have one as a fun summer sort of car.

Admitted i'd rather a 911 but i doubt i'd afford one lol

My Parents have tried all sorts to replace the TT with, Alpina Z4 came close (Sub 5 second 0-60) but being a full spec Alpina, the BMW dealers don't like them very much and they can be a nightmare to get parts for.

Boxster S is the only other car they can consider - an M3 is too big for my Mum (i've tried to tell her) but other then the Boxster, we/they can't seem to find much!

Don't get me wrong Nick - I wouldn't say no if offered one - it was just things like the indicator stalks and stuff - little things that took away a lot of the appeal for me. Just felt (for me) that the M3 was a lot more car for the same money - but not really a like-for-like comparison I know.

Obviously a 911 is a whole different kettle of fish....and a whole different pricing band too!
