i think my lump is underpowerd, help!

Recommended Posts

i had a wee shot of my m8`s mk4 golf tdi yesterday and it

feels just as quick as my vr6 B) ,surely this is not right?

i had a look thru the service histoy and found that the previous owner had a problem with the car cutting out

intermittantly,here`s what it says:

"found faults relating to hall sender & ecu.erased faut memory

& rechecked,now clear.advise that if fault persists,a new hall

sender would be required".the car hasn`t cut out or ran rough

since i`ve had it but could the hall sender still be fookt?

i`ve never drove any other vr`s so i don`t know how fast they

should feel, twice as fast as a bloody tdi i`d hope?

car was born in may `95 so OBD1 then?

TDi's and other turboed cars do FEEL quicker. The power band is so narrow that you get a thrown back at every gear change. The VR6 on the other hand releases the power quite evenly through the rev range, so you dont such a voilent slap in the face at gear change. Saying that, you may have a problem with yours.

if your not sure, try and drive someone elses or get it on a rolling road. I think you pay about £45 for a session - that'll let you know for definate either way.

agree with shail about the power distribution, tdi dont pull so well all the way to the top, they run out of steam.

well, there is more than one mkIV TDi, some have 150bhp, and a lot more torque than a vr6...so will actually be quicker or very similar on the road.

but, to add to shail comments, the tdi generally feels quicker than it is, where as the vr6 feels slower than it is. the power deilvery is so different. don't forget the tdi redlines at 4k rpms, whcih is when the vr6 just starts getting going.

the info you found in your sh just means the car sprung up a fault code at some point, and the dealer has plugged in vag-com and deleted it. it could have sprung up the code for a totally innocent reason. for piece of mind get your fault codes checked again and you'll know if its still there. a hall sender prob will cost you lots of bhp, but will be obvious as the car will be lunpy.

You dont get a lot of extra power for your money if you're trying to mod a VR: theyre notoriously difficult to tune for more bhp.

I doubt a chip will make a big, noticable difference.

I think ingham has good things to say about a chip he has used, however.

The VR is a quick car though! get yours on a rolling road.

If you really want more performance, buy an evo!

i wouldn't say its difficult...just mega expensive.

a 150bhp mkIV tdi is no slouch...only slightly less bhp than a vr6' date=' but much much more torque (torque is more important for street use i reckon)

lol, i'm with you there on the oil burning tractor thing, ballsey tdi drivers golf or passat get on my tits but from experience the vr is definitely quicker as it just keeps going and going and going and you know eventually all they'll see are your tail pipes :D
