*P3nfold* 0
I am looking at Oil Coolers currently at the 13 or 16 row with thermostat housing. Does anyone know if the heat exchanger cap is plastic or metal for 97 plate OBD2?Also is a 13 row good enough for a forced inducted VR running around 300 BHP?The chap says a metal one is required to work with a Mocal kit! Ben Seabrook 4
13 row will be plenty - how high are your oil temps getting then ?
*P3nfold* 0
Hi Ben,They currently are only at 96 but when I go forced I have no idea tbh.
craggsy 91
A 97 vr will have a plastic cap so you will need a metal one
FishWick 21
If you're only seeing 96 now, I wouldn't worry too much about a Mocal if it's a predominantly a road car. Track cars benefit from oil coolers but modern synthetics are fine up to 130-140 deg C.I have a Mocal 13 row in mine, but only because it's in a Corrado and they run 114 deg C just cruising at 80 mph as standard!!! Ben Seabrook 4
as above mate I was running 285bhp and never had a problem with the oil temps
*P3nfold* 0
When on boost say 8 psi on a S/C what sort of temperatures should I expect?
Ben Seabrook 4
your never going to be permanently on boost are you, around the ring my oil temp hit around 110 maximium mate and on normal road driving never more than around
*P3nfold* 0
Ok Ben, I am 90% going to be on normal roads. So if I don't use the oil cooler it makes sense to use decent 10w40 oil, so wheres the cheapest place to get Quantum?
craggsy 91
Just service it regularly and you should be fine. Only on track or constant hard driving will up the temps.I had 300F /140C showing on the nurburgring GP track and at Snetterton but normal road driving including spirited stuff i only see 110C and mines a turbo. Just keep an eye on temps and decide from there, hence why I bought one and never fitted it to the VR
Ben Seabrook 4
yeah then I would just do regular oil and oil filter changes mate and you should be fine - u can always add one later but I don't think u will need it as for the oil get synta silver from GSF I think as thats the best one for the vr's

Lukey. 381
you also have to remember that oil has a normal operating temperature, having too good of a cooling system isnt necessarily a good thing if it ends up being too effective and you never run at normal temp, additional coolers are so if you are going way over it brings the temps back into normal range.
