VeedubGeezer 0
Hi all,I'm into my second week of VR ownership and I've noticed a couple of nasty sounding nioses coming from under the bonnet when coldMost noticable is a whine that goes up and down with the revs. I've done a search on here and general concensus is that this is the oil pump and it's normal for it to whine when cold. Is this right? I'm a little worried as when the car went in for service I was told the sump had been changed at some point and the new one had been hit as well. The pick up pipe was dented but repairable. This has been repaired now but it's made no difference. Also, the car sounds tappetty when driven for the first 3 or 4 minutes if I do anything other than tickle the throttle. It's fine on idle. I've only revved it to 2.5k when cold though so dont know if this would go away higher up the rev range. After 3-4 minutes (when the water temp starts to register) it's fine and smooth.Car's a 1997 Golf on 80k (no signs of chains being done) and has just had oil, filter and plugs. No air filter change yet as I have an induction kit to go on this weekend. Please help as this is my first VR and I'm worried I've bought a lemon
legvw 0
It does sound like the oil pump. There not cheap, but worth replacing now before it causes any serious damage.
VeedubGeezer 0
Is it desperate? I've heard some people say it's normal for VRs to whine when cold? Could this be why it's tappety when cold too?
p0u1 14
mine wines when cold, first thing to look at would be the tensioner as that the comon thing to make noise lol, but a vr6 with 80k, even if you have to spend a few quid youve got a very young vr :-)

VeedubGeezer 0
Thanks guys. Will look into it a little further. Is the noisy top end when cold ok? I think it's been pootled around before I had it as the last few services have been every 12 months and at about 5k each year.
