Caddyslammed 16
I was just wondering if you knowledgable people out there would suggest some suitable sized superchargers for my VR6 golf, i know people are using the mini ones, some people suggest the Eaton M90 etc, so just wondering from experiances you could tell me some chargers with make and model number and what sort of power/boost they are good for on the VR6 engine, thanks. Ben Seabrook 4
been covered so many times ! have a look through here http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?155255 and then search the tuning section all the answers are there
Caddyslammed 16
OK cheers mate, just don't normally find what i am specifically after so i would start a thread anyway
Ben Seabrook 4
no worries but to paraphrase the three main chargers are Rotrex, Vortech and Z the Rotrex is the best setup overall and with the upgrades you can make the most power but peeps on here ( inc me ) run all 3 without too many issues especially around the 300bhp mark - up to that power you dont need to do anything else to the engine it will run quite happily on standard internals etc - you can lower the compression or fit oil coolers etc but they arent neccesary either - you can find the kits 2 nd hand for around the £1.5k-£2K and fit it yourself takes about half a day or send the car to someone like Storm or Stealth and they will do the lot for you as for the other chargers like Eaton etc some peeps do use them but the 3 mentioned above are the best to go for mate
Caddyslammed 16
Ok thanks mate, i appreciate the reply .I have got a little thread going on here, and its for a DIY build, something a little different, and it would probably include an Eaton or something.I was asking for model numbers and differences/power etc of these sorts of charger, m62/m90 etc, just to help me choose. When i had my last VR i remember vortech and rotrex doing kits, i just dont quite fancy the kits, although tailored and probably better than what i end up with, i just fancy doing it myself sorta thing . Ben Seabrook 4
have a read through this http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?215746.post - tbh either the kit or eaton with fitting a charger its only 3 bits of pipework and the charger itself so not a huge self build thing like a turbo setup would be mate
Ben Seabrook 4
oh and the only thing I remember about the eaton chargers is that they run very very hot so you need extra cooling
Caddyslammed 16
Cool mate trhanks, i just saw that VR on youtube, sounds nice . I don't think it will be too much work going the eaton route, oil cooler will be needed, but the only thing that concerns me is the intercooler or chargecooler, i dont really want to chop my car about too much, i may get a different bumper, i have got a couple of intercoolers in my garage at the moment, we will see, i may look into the charge cooling side first . J5KE F 0
As ben said really! I have had two vortech vf9's a vf1 and a rotrex.. Rotrex best for power as holds boost and will not slip. Unsure or eaton or merc Compressors, would prove an interesting project tho!
Caddyslammed 16
I think this winter will be interesting lol
Ben Seabrook 4
you could look into a water injection kit too mate
Caddyslammed 16
I really need to get some sort of idea on what chargecooler i could use, before i forget the idea and use a large intercooler to keep temps down, and i know how important keeping those temps down is... Caddyslammed 16
Yes water injection, oil cooler, probably intercooler, an M90, remote oil filter, probably smaller alternator..., good lord what fun!, and this is gonna be noisy .
Caddyslammed 16
http://www.clubgti.com/FORUM/showthread.php?t=202290hmmmmmmAnd whats this eaton M112 lark lol
Ben Seabrook 4
hmmm interesting thread that but confirms the two things I remember that they get fecking hot and dont make enough power for all the hassle !! be good to see something different though mate
Caddyslammed 16
I believe its widely known that the eatons produce more low down torque than the centrifugal type chargers, and to me more usable torque right where i want it, positive displacement chargers i think they are called?. I agree that right now the intercooler install really does not look appealing to me, especially going to that hassle may as well go turbo!, but anyway i am edging towards the M90 right now. p0u1 14
i have thought about it but i cant see a plade that i could place the charger and not have a stubpidly long belt that will be pron to slipping

poll250 0
Sounds like a good project, would be good to see something a bit different! Saw this car going down Abingdon Road the other week, looked really good.

[/quote']havent heard that tbh but a set of 263 cams with my Z charger gave me plenty of low down torque - yeah the benefit of a charger inmo is that they are simple bolt on in a few hours and your off application if your going to go to loads of hassle making parts modifying etc you might as well go turbo be interesting to see what you do mate
Caddyslammed 16
I just don't fancy turboing a mk3 vr, my personal opinion is that for this front wheel drive a bit lardy as standard car, even a small turbo i wouldnt consider, and a big one for me, on this standard road car is just a no no for me, if i started to consider this then i should have kept my 490bhp impreza, which i sold to buy this VR.I dont see it at hassle mate, you know fabricating stuff and getting stuff to work/fit etc, i see it as an achievement when i stand back and look at it, especially instead of just bolting something on .I am currently looking at finding an M90 for a reasonable price, i think the success or not of this search will dictate what route i take from now on , it should be interesting lol . Ben Seabrook 4
firstly let me say I am not having a pop or anything or trying to knock what your doing mate just have a discussion.I know what your saying about the fabricating stuff etc which is great and I love doing that and did pretty much all the work to my car myself, I just belive in the adage of not building something you can buy in a way - as said with a charger it's an easy mod in a way ok you need to get a few pipes together etc but apart from that in essence it's a really simple bit of kit and therefore doesnt need much fabrication anyway. If I wanted to have a go I would do a turbo - a "small" one is going to make roughly the same sort of power as a stage 2 charger 280-300 which in the vr6 is completley usable and even the big power turbo cars can use the power once you learn how to drive it !I personally went down the charger route for 2 reasons - 1 was for the noise which when coupled with the vr is fantastic and personally I dont think the turbos sound as good and secondly the power delivery means its useable power all thoroughout the rev range so I agree with you about charger over turbo in one respect but think if your determined to do a project a turbo is worth considering do you know what sort of power the m90's make ??
Caddyslammed 16
Hehe same as mate, discussion is healthy .I completely agree with you on the noise of a supercharger, its awesome especially coupled with the VR roar.As far as i know the M90 should make 280 with all supporting mods. With regards to a turbo conversion i really dont know now lol, my Impreza ran no dump valve, as i dont like them, and the TD05/6 turbo i ran was fine with no dump valve, now all these noises like dump valves and mad waistgate chatter dont seem to fit in my mind coming out of a VR6 golf, but that said, you have seriously got me thinking now,,,,,,,,,,, i still stand by the fact knowing me that is i decide to turbo this golf, it will get very expensive and i'm nt sure where it would end..., syncro running gear, quaife dog box, errr need i go on lol . So perhaps a brief run down of what the standard VR6 engine can handle power wise , torque figure, and the basics of what i might have to do in the engine build that would be different to the build for a supercharger, hmmm now obviously this would turn into a forged engine and money money money lol, Ben what have you started???? Caddyslammed 16
Standalone engine management?, all sorts of stuff expensive, how far can you map the original OBD2 ecu?, can it be turbo'd?
