6 hour test drive!

Recommended Posts

Well - picked up the car today...I'm now officially a VR6 owner - yey for me!

Car is lovely - totally standard 1997 3 door Highline in black. Has 6 CD changer and sunroof which is a nice spec. Still has the manky wooden gear knob, BBS Solitude alloys and crap VW cassette head unit....which I find quite comforting as it's unmolested....that's my job!!! :P The only non-standard item is an induction kit - which was on my list anyway - so that's saved a few quid.

Have a set of 17 inch Titan Racing Zeus on order, and it'll be dropped 45mm by Tuesday....I'll post some before and after pics, but I'm sure you don't need to see a black standard Highline - you know what one looks like!

Has a few tiny bubbles of surface rust - but they'll be seen to over the next few weeks. Then we're into ICE and probably a new grille and perhaps some tints.

What struck the me the MOST about the car was the NOISE! Awesome!!! I'm coming from an E46 M3 - which makes a totally different, but equally impressive sound - but there's something about the sound of the VR that put a grin on my face all the way from Newcastle to London....he he he. Drove like a prick all the way home....off the gas....on the gas....off the gas....on the gas.....what a sound! Wicked. Definitely need a straight through SS exhaust to add to the fun - any recommendations?

I always knew that the VR was a good car on paper, and coming from a new M3 I always thought I'd be disappointed - but not at ALL! Seriously, seriously fun, fast and solid motor - and for literally a tenth of what the M3 cost me!!!

Superb.

I have the bug welll and truly and my economy drive to save money whilst I get my new business going aint gonna happen.....I've got a list as long as my arm of shit I want to do to it already.....bring it on.

I've been SO missing out.

Sorry, I'll sit down and take a deep breath....but seriously....talk about bang for your buck!!!

Can't wait to slam the thing and get some rims...that's priority one....and then we'll see where we go from there.

But seriously - who makes the best straight through SS exhausts for these pocket rockets....I've GOT to get one.

Yours chuffed and far too over excitedly, Joe. :)

I thought I was excited when I got mine, but you really are!! Does it feel slow after an M3? I was following an E36 M3 the other day and he seemed to be struggling to lose me - I'm guessing the Power to Weight ratio can't be that far different!

I have a supersprint exhaust on mine and i never hesitate to recommend it to people - great sound!

VRs do sound great! I live on a hill, and its on a bit of road where people like to really floor it in their cars.

Whenever i hear a car that sounds nice i run to the front door to see what it is (ok... a bit sad).

Anyhow ive got used to the sound of a crap car with exhaust, and even scoobies are run of the mill. The only cars that have got me running to the door recently have been a supercharged AMG Merc, some crazy American thing with a V8 sticking out the bonnet, and, you guessed it, a VR6! So much noise from such a small car!

Mr Ben - That's what I think was SO pleasing about it - the E46 M3 has a power to weight ratio of 218bhp per tonne the VR is about 142 I think. And the torque figures are 269lb@4800 rpm on the BM and 170lb @ 4200rpm on the Golf....so I was ready to find the VR unexciting as ON PAPER it's a hands down no contest - but it wasn't AT ALL the same in reality. Dare I say it - on the motorways it was as much fun as the M3!

I think what might be scueing my perceptions slightly is that I didn't have to re-mortgage my house and sell a kidney to finance buying the VR as I did with the M3. It's the performance to bank account ratio that the VR murders the BMW on!! Once my business is running as I want it to - I certainly won't be selling the VR....just keeping it as a project car....I like driving it that much!

It doesn't have the same outright blistering pace of the M3 (which was 0-60 in 5.2 and 50-70 (3rd gear) in 3.1secs) but it felt so capable on the motorways - and embarrasing 325i drivers has become something of a pasttime of mine....so it was nice to be able to do that again. :)

Perhaps my first post was a bit of a rave review, but I was just so damn impressed...now where's that phone number for Awesome.....

I had an E36 M3 Evo for a while and was due to sell the VR, but when it came down to it I actually preffered the VR and ended up moving the M3 on! (luckily for a little more than I bought it for!)

As for exhausts, I tried a few but Supersprint wins hands down for me, for both noise and quality!
