cliveyp 0 Posted January 30, 2005 Report Share Posted January 30, 2005 I opened up my VR6 ECU at last this afternoon to find that the chip wasn't exactly what i was expecting to see. I was expecting a rectangular eprom with a label on it but the only thing i could actually see that slightly resembled the chip was a small square one (about 20-25mm sq), that was pugged into a brown socket (and actually looked very similar to the old maths co-processors in old PC's). Anyway, this was towards the rear of the board, and had what looked to be a piggy back devive pluggedc into it. It was like a small board with yet another brown socket and chip on. Chipped????? I think later VR's had the chip soldered to the board whereas early ones had a socket with a chip in it. I may be wrong though.Have you tried removing the piggy back device and seeing if it works? I may be wrong though.Have you tried removing the piggy back device and seeing if it works?Mines a 96 Highline, so i would have thought it'd be (supposedly), a later style.........Didn't remove the piggy back, as it was starting to get a bit dusky and didn't really want to be pissing about in the dark getting it all sorted so put it back as it was. cliveyp 0 Posted January 31, 2005 Author Report Share Posted January 31, 2005 Just spoken to Vince. The standard chip should be soldered in to the board, but some nice fellow has changed that for me. Now all i need to do is source a standard OBD2 chip............He's looking for one that he thinks he has there and i'll find out more in a moment, other wise, and of you supercharged guys (or otherswise chipped guys) got a standard OBD2 chip???? PM'd him now.Vince did find a chip hanging round his place, which is more than likely from a VR6 (his words were "the only car we have anything to do with that uses this type of chip is the OBD2 VR6's, so i can't see that it'd be from anything else". badboyV6 4 Posted February 10, 2005 Report Share Posted February 10, 2005 Clive ive got a standard chip....You can borrow for a while (if not for good!) just need to get my chip back in. Apparently early superchips were 22 pin whereas the later were piggybacked with 44 pin so the superchips guy tells me....the file is 128kb in size and if youve got a dodgy chip you can get another for next to nothing- 30 quid the guy would charge me if the chip was faulty. How did you unplug the loom from the ECU? funnily enough ive taken mine apart tonight and couldnt get the feckin plug out! All i needed to do to get the board out!!!
