going from first to second night before last was going up in speed and then there was a sort of bang now there is no gears yet i can feel the gears there when I'm stopped and the clutch engages but there is a grinding noise in each gear like as if the clutch plate is hitting on the gears but not locking on..... Anyone got any ideas as to what this could be... Please?

i had a look where it happened and under the car no oil anywhere and i only topped up the oil in the gearbox a few weeks ago. and if it was gearbox wouldn't i get at least one or two gears and when i try it i can let off the clutch and it doesn't move just a slight grinding noise but when i put the clutch in its jerks a little bit as if its about to bite

have you checked the wires going from the gearstick to the gearbox?

One of those might have hopped off and now you cant gear.

Hello finally had another chance to take a look at my car today, had a look above the exhaust and heat shield below where the gear stick is the 2 cables from the gear stick to the gear box there both quite slack one more than the other and the rubber around them was melted and broken off and when i was going through the gears only one cable was doing anything even when in nutural shifting it left and right? could this be my problem? should these leads be slack or tight? best way to get at them? Thanks

they should be tight... and move when you change gear... they do snap... or might have come off at your gear stick end.... if its melted, its not a good sign... the cables should slide through the sleeves (effectively bowden cables... if they cant slide or have snapped, you've lost your gear change abilty :)

That sounded like the symptoms mine had when my clutch fork snapped. Sounded like the gearbox was gone but I could feel all the gears. I just replaced the fork as clutch was fine.

But them cables seem more like your problem.

Yeh im also thinking now its nothing to do with the Shifter Box can you explain a little bit more bout the problem you had + how to find out if its that and can you post a link or picture to the part i require if it is that part ? thanks

I'm on here on my phone, if you give me an email address I can send you a picture of the broken part, u can see its cracked. Only way really is to take the box out or take the slave cylinder out and the white ball on the end of the roid was cracked on mine from where the fork was cracked. Might be able to see the fork from there too but not much.

My clutch pedal felt kinda spongy and more I used it the more the biting point was lower until the biting point was right on the floor and eventually couldn't get any gears and was just grinding. The part was only about 20 quid from vw but I had it welded to make it stronger to prevent breaking again. I will have a look in my receipts and should have a part number for it. Apparently quite common fault.

I didn't even take the box right out to do it, I had it on the ramp and got the box back enough to get my hand it and replace the parts. I will post part number.

Can't find the part number now lol. But its the clutch fork you may need, mine made a horrible noise when I pushed the pedal right down and wouldn't advise doing it too much incase it is that. At first I thought it was release bearing as it was making a noise without foot on the clutch but that's obviously just because the fork was bent. As I said pm me your email or something and I'll send a pic

Hello m8 thanks again for the info... i just ran the car for the first time now even in neutral there is a really faint grindey noise until i put the clutch down then there is no noise i gave it a bit of a rev as well and brought the car to the bite point and it almost went but then just started making a loud grind noise sounds as if the plate isn't getting pushed hard enough to actually engage... thanks I'll pm you my email now.

No worries. From what you've said it does sound like that. I've got a an uprated clutch in mine so I had an engineer weld my new one up to make it stronger down the sides.

Not sure but I think the uprated clutch was part to blame for the fork bending and cracking. I emailed the pic of mine earlier today.

Let me know how ya get on. I'm interested to see if its the same problem
