Hi,

I'm new to the forum so hopefully I'm in the right place to post this thread.

I've got a 1997 Golf VR6 which has ABS issues. At it's last MOT, the VW specialist garage highlighted an intermittent fault with the rear right sensor and replaced it which got it through the MOT. However, the ABS light came on very soon after, and Vagcom shows up the very same fault. From the vast amount of information I have read, it appears that a faulty ABS control module is the most likely cause. Does this sound about right to you guys? There is absolutely no pattern to when the ABS light comes on and stays on. It also appears that pump/ecu part numbers are very specific and need to replace like for like to avoid complications.

The pump number is 1H2 614 217 E and the ECU is 3A0 907 309 E. Don't suppose anyone has a spare knocking about for a good price? I could get mine tested/remanufactured which would give me a 2 year warranty but I'm a bit reluctant to do so as I don't know 100% if this is the root of the problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated (could live to regret that).

Thanks, Ben.

Your ABS issues were exactly the same as mine so from that, dry joint fix(es) is whats needed to your ECU.

Your part nrs are also the same as mine and they are like rockin' horse doo doo. Going on previous prices (including the pump) when I was looking, I've seen £130+.....and don't forget this is for a 13/ 14yr 2nd hand ECU which there are no guarantees the same issues won't reappear sooner or later. So wouldn't bother really.

You've done your research and if its guarantee you want, I would go with the firms offering this.

cheers,

Thanks finny,

I can only find one available at present with the exact same pump/ecu numbers and this is going for £250! No surprise it's still there then. Remanufacturing mine will cost me the best part of £200 but like you say, the 2 year guarantee would make that option worthwhile.

The only other one I've seen matching this ecu number had a different pump number (I think 1H2 614 217 C). This was going for £60 or best offer. I made a token offer for it but didn't get a response. This would work fine though right?

Cheers

Hi,

Yeah I saw that thread, just had a re-read. Didn't realise it was done by finny. To be honest though, think this might be beyond me. I'm very much a 'do it yourself and know it's done right' type of person but don't have all the tools at present as still building up bit by bit. I could see me spending £30-50 plus time spent and getting nowhere, I've done it before! The girlfriend has a panic attack anytime I say 'I'm going out to have a look at the car' cos if it doesn't go how I want it to, the day's a write off! 8-)

Cheers

As been already said, part nrs must match the existing.

Try and remove the ECU yourself and send it to the chap I used, Starsoldering as in the write up (do use special delivery etc, can't have these ecus lost in the post). Check what he is charging but i think for £50 your issues will be solved. Worth a punt?

Not to worry jimmyb, thanks for checking.

Going to have a look at taking the ECU off tommorow. Hopefully the 4 bolts don't provide any headaches as can see there is only a limited amount of space to work with in that corner! Will then get in touch with Starsoldering to get a quote for re-soldering the dry joints. Will update soon.

Many thanks to all for your help

Had same problems for about a year, ensured my sensors were clean, were replaced last year, removed ecu abs unit (see Finnys thread) and sent it to Stu @ star soldering, who found 5 dry joints (he has a magnifying device to see dry joints easier) plus he redone all the other power ones and it worked..no more abs light problems..(went out after I drove the car over 15 miles per hour which resets the ecu) well pleased. Posted it on Monday got it back Wednesday, great service for £50....try him....starsoldering.co.uk:-p

Cheers Varr6pete,

I managed to get a replacement, albeit second hand, ABS ECU from ebay at a decent price and got round to fitting it last week.

It seems to have sorted the problem out although it is still early days as the problem with mine was very intermittent. Just keeping my fingers well and truly crossed everytime I get in and drive!

If the problem comes back, will definitely send the old ECU away to starsoldering. Is nice to hear more positive feedback about them.

Just a quick question for everyone. Is the braking compromised only when the ABS light is on? I say this because mine was only on sporadically but braking now seems much improved, even compared to when the light was out. Sounds strange and is probably all in my mind :)
