Miss-Vw 2
Hey guys, Just forked out nearly £800 getting the VR up to scratch - new coil pack, leads, full service, suspension...amongst a list of other things, but ive noticed it seems to be really whiney now when I start it up, and its definitley worse in cold/freezing weather. The whine seems to go once the engie has warmed up abit. Is it maybe gearbox noise or something to do with the tensioner belt? Engine mileage is creeping up to 80k and the only other noises I can hear is slightly noisy tappets on startup - which disappears after a minute or so. Any ideas?
VR6Nat 9
A light whine is quite normal, but if its bad then get someone to rev the engine while you listen under the bonnet to check where its coming from, could be the belt tensioner pulley.
gary.scales 0
mine does exactly the same and has been doing it for four years, no better, no worse in 45k miles. hope that helps

spadam 7
The oil pump whines when its cold but this is normal. could well be that.
jimmyb 2
To be honest every vr6 ive had has whined on cold mornings,it goes away after a few minutes though, probably the oil pump as spadam as mentioned above.
gary.scales 0
new pullry on, still whiney on start up, so disregard pulley being the issue!!
VR6Nat 9
new pullry on' date=' still whiney on start up, so disregard pulley being the issue!![/quote']Not necessarily, it could still be her pulley! Most vrs whine a bit when really cold, its perfectly normal, but if it gets any worse and stands out then id say again, listen under the bonnet and get someone to rev the car a bit, then you can pin point where the whining is coming from... if it is the left side of the engine (next to the airbox) then its your belt tensioner pulley, if not then that rules that out.
