Hi, got a '96 Golf VR6 with nearly 120k on the clock. Running fine but over the last week has developed a noise coming from the left of the engine (looking at it from the front of the car). Water and oil temp ok and no change to performance. Sounds as if a bearing is on it's way out or something. Was hoping it was just the fan belt but that looks in good nick. Any ideas? Water pump/alternator/tensioner? Anything common? Difficult to pin point exactly where the noise is coming from.

Cheers

Just taken the tensioner off and stripped it down, and surely enough if was bone dry and very stiff. There was also a small bit of metal under the seals (can just see it at the bottom of the photo):

Not sure where it came from, as bearing looked intact. Seals were a little worn, but after a load of grease was packed into the bearing they fitted back ok.

Just put it back on and...........

....... she's running like a dream again! :)

The benefits of this place are already apparent!

it usually is just that, quite common, mine went and only took half hour to replace it with another one... i did try packing mine with grease but one drive and it spat it all out... so if that happens to you just get another one from a scrappy.

cheers guys, the noise is weird imagine grit flicking up under the car when you drive over it,its that sound for like 3 seconds then it goes for like 2 seconds then the identical noise is back,in this same pattern constant, and it does sound like its coming from the right hand side of the air filter behind the block as well

i just had a good listen to where the noise is coming from and i can hear a slight noise from the bearing on the tensioner when its ticking over but when i rev it it sounds like there is also tappit noise coming from the same side of the engine, does the bearing noise get louder if the car is revved? as the noise is only coming from the driverside of the engine it makes me still think it could just be the tensioner :S as my serpentine belt could do with replacing i just wondered if they are a pain to change because there doesnt look much room down there, any help muchly apprieciated :)

Easy to change mate, just make sure you get it all routed the right way. If you live in Wolves as in Wolverhampton I've got a bolt which is the perfect length for the tensioner if you need it

well the vw specialist was polish and he could hear the noise but seemed clueless of a solution and just said its seems ok, a complete joker, then i took it to another garage and he said it was the timing chain. but the noise is defernatly coming from above the belt tensioner pullley i said to the guy the chains are on the other side of the car near the gearbox but was adiment it was above the pulley can anyone confirm this? really stuck now also performance is bad now.cheers
