My light has been coming on and off for the last few months. It has been into my local garage a couple of times. They have plugged it in to VAG-COM and it threw up a few error codes for a sensor. This has been replaced by the garage.

Now I picked up the car and the light has come on again!! :(:(

The mechanic now thinks it could be more than a sensor and that the ABS pump is faulty.

Does this sound right? If the ABS pump is replaced do you have to replace the ECU? I thought I read someone saying you had to.

Any help would be most appreciated as this little light is causing me lots of bother and $$$!

When the light is off, the ABS works fine.

Trouble is I dont the garage is too clued up about VAG cars. The first time the car went in they replaced this sensor that keeps bring up the errors and then when this did not cure the light they replaced the same sensor again in the instance that it was faulty (unlikely??). Now we are two sensors on and the light is still coming on intermittently.

acf8181, can you tell me a bit more about the ring so I can tell the garage what to look for?

Cheers

i wouldn't use that garage again then....a vr6 is even more finicky than most other vag cars, if they cant get their head round a 'normal' vag car they aint got a hope with a vr6 and will cost you more money.

after they fitted the new sensor did they delete the fault code? i think its like airbag lights, even if you cure the problem you then still have to reset the code or the light stays on.

i have the facilities to do it on pre '94 cars now by the way.

They are friends of friend so I trust them and know they are not knowingly trying to rip me off. They are a Rover :o specialist so when they started to suggest it may a big part (like the ABS pump) that maybe at fault I just want to make sure they have tried all other possibillities.

They must of reset the code becase the light was off when I picked the car up. It has come on since though, but goes out as well.

Do you know if it is an intermittant fault or a permanent fault? I get intermittant faults on my ABS on one of the sensors (rear drivers side). When the light goes on 9 times out of 10 if I turn the ignition off and back on again the ABS light will go off after driving a few meters. If its a permanent fault then the ABS light will stay on regardless.

Intermittant faults are still stored (and will come up as intermittent using VAG-COM or similar) even if the light clears. If its intermittent it may just be dirty contacts or something which is the problem I had about a year ago.
