russj249 2
not sure about a specific rule about this. I've heard a few things going about. One is that it's governed by noise, so if it's not too loud and does it's job, it's ok.Also heard that it must exit behind the doors (although I believe a new Merc has them out infront of the doors, can't remember which though)Another is that it has to be on opposing side to the petrol filler cap!And the one you say about blowing fumes into the road. Now, I work at an MOT station, and nothing about this is covered for the MOT. The noise limit test stands, although VOSA don't issue any equipment to test this with! Also we do all of the MOT's for Westfield Sports Cars. They have side pipes on most of their cars, only the odd 1 has them out the back.Fact is, if these comply with road standards when going through the SVA test, then surely it must be ok. After all, if they're fitted with a Zetec lump, the exhausts are on the left (dependent on engine size for some reason) and if they're fitted with a Duratec engine, the exhaust are on the right. The ones with the Rover V8 and TVR V8 are out both sides.Either way.. this is to get something started, so see what other people come up with.
russj249 2
I know it's pretty out of date, but have a read of this. Again nobody can confirm anything.. http://www.ukpoliceonline.co.uk/index.php?/topic/24099-side-exit-exhaust/page__p__258179__hl__%2Bside+%2Bexit+%2Bexhaust__fromsearch__1#entry258179
gavinvr6 0
the mad merc with the zorst out the front wing is the mclaren slr. and as for noise that thing is a joke. also some of the drift cars have zorst coming out the front wing. plus from my max power days of driving a few people had them exiting out the front.my main concern is the spitting fumes at pedestrians. well not really a concern as i wont be breathing it in lol.if there is nothing in the mot testers bible to define where an exhaust can or cant exit then i think i feel a side exit coming on. also since there are no clear guide lines as to noise limits and since i previously passed an mot with my old vr running straight through cat back im thinking straight through cat back exiting out the passenger side of the rear bumper
gavinvr6 0
after reading the linky (cheers russ) ive decided a side exit out behind the rear wheel is an ecceptable way to do it. because .....a. it cant be drawn in through an open windb. its behind the front wheelsc. so long as it meets emmisions limits its safewasnt someone else on here running side exits just in front of the rear wheels not to long ago. FishWick 21
You won't be spitting anything at pedestrians unless you're running a turbo and bouncing it off the limiter, so don't worry about catching someone's trousers on fire :-)I'm sure I read somewhere that side exits are OK if fitted at the factory, but retro fitted raises a few eyebrows. I think it's another one of those grey areas some testers turn a blind eye too!
gavinvr6 0
my tester is quite good, he's a dub fan and plays be the letter of the book, so no defined rule means not an issue
maftec 0
Even though mine is for the track only, I just built a 2.5" straight through pipe from standerd header, which does a ninty bend and side exits in front of the n/s/r wheel. Was a bit too loud so where the Cat was i put in a cheep stainless straight through muffler to give it a better tune. Sounds and goes like greased weasle shit. However if you done this and put a cherry bomb tail as side exit i think this would be well in linits and sound the Dogs swingers. Good luck.
gavinvr6 0
i've got an ashley cat back in mild steel i wanna use with a small middle box, but to replace the twin tail back box. im gunna be stuffing a universal 5" stainless stubby back box out the side of the rear bumper.i know some of you dont like these 'jap crap' box's but since this my 2nd vr is just for fun and not needed for family duties im gunna play silly buggers with it poking the filter out the offside wing and the zorst out the nearside. i wanna hear it suck up everything in its path and then spit it out the back think fat lairy pikey bird kind of brash lol
