sharma187 0
Just wanted to ask how much the timing chain kit costs and if it comes with sprockets tensioners and guide rails. My clutch needs doing so I'm thinking of doing the chains at the same time the engine has done 108k. I hear a tiny noise on start up but after two minutes or so it goes away. sharma187 0
Woahh finally a reply lol. That's brilliant mate thanks for your help. I haven't got the tensioner bolt didn't know I needed one but will pick one up now. I have already bought my clutch now, do you think the head should be reconditioned at the same time will it improve performance allot. ?? I'm a mechanic by trade so I will be doing it myself heard it's quite a job Though.
michael5556 247
Where did you get the bits from if you don't mind me asking? And it depends on your mileage, if your going to do your headgasket or not
sharma187 0
U got my chains from euro car parts they didn't have the creme colour guide rail Though have to get from tps.
sharma187 0
Mileage is 108k
michael5556 247
It won't really improve performance but will help it last a lot longer I am currently doing mine with new gaskets and seals etc
jims13 6
its not as bad as you may think, but you do need a plate to lock the cams into place . you could have th head checked , but if it aint broke then dont fix it. my car had done 194000 miles on the orig engine when i sold it.. it also had 389 bhp . i carried out the conversion circa 170 ish . i had no problems.my point is , its more about the life it has had and if its been looked after. a stamped book is great , but you need reciepts to go with it . sharma187 0
True say mate well I picked up mine really cheap £600 to be precise and it's only got 108k on it fully loaded as the highlines are purple leather and and the rest. I think I'll leave the head for now as I can do it any time and I don't think the box has got to come of to do it. I Havnt got the locking tool Do I really need it I'm starting tommorow. jims13 6
you will need alocking tool or a piece of stell plate modded to fit , other the cams can jump around when retensioning everything.
sharma187 0
Right so all my tools are ready. The only thi g I haven got is the camshaft locking tool I'm going to take a chance and do without it. Hopefully they dont move.
Daverse 175
tbh i wouldnt take that chance, wait till you get the locking plate, otherwise they most definetly will move, not worth a blown engine!
sharma187 0
Hmm ok someone said I could custom make a tool could anyone shed some more light on this ?
spadam 7
Take a look in the premium members section. There's a guide. Just a thin bit of steel plate i believe.
michael5556 247
Yeah it's 1/8 thick look on ebay
sharma187 0
Can't find on eBay. Do I have to be premium member to check out the tool? What can actually happen if I don't use the tool has anyone done it without the tool??
Daverse 175
If you dont use the tool the cams will come out of time with each other / crank shaft, so when you start the engine, the valves will start hitting the pistons crowns, then your entering a whole world of trouble, bent valves, pretty blown head, and severe damage to pistons.Trust me when i say, make sure the engine is in time!! Daverse 175
Oh, and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VR6-Camshaft-Alignment-Engine-Repair-3268-Cam-Tool-VW-/170620273753?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27b9c2c459first link i found
sharma187 0
See the thing is I'm not going to be able to get it until end of next week if I order it now. Does that tool lock both cams or are their two different locking plates for each cam. Can I simply wedge metal into the slots on the cams ??
Daverse 175
it slots into both cams on the other side of the sprocketsif you get a flat mit of metal inbetween the cams, in the little slot there is, then ye you can, as long as. theres no play
sharma187 0
Ok I'll c when I get the covers of what size of metal I need. Ive just got the box and flywheel off on the floor!! Not sure wether I'm going to get the intake and the rest of today. Should I drain the oil before I do this or will I be ok.
