The Monk 50
Right. Please, hear me out. I know it sounds stupid and really pathetic.Back when I ran my VR, I used, no word of a lie, a tumble dryer outlet hose with a few stockings for filters, as a direct CAI intake to the VR MAF and on the rollers, created 183bhp.Now, I have a crap payed job, a mrs that wants NO money spent on it and a child, so money saving is a given. Now, I wondered if the intake pipes and tumble dryer intake, wrapped with a shed load of kitchen foil (I'm not the kind of guy that gives a flying turd, if the engine bay is "scene" or not), and wondered if kitchen foil had heat reflecting properties.I know it does wonders for a turkey on christmas or the pork joint, but does it reflect heat? Just curious.A lot of people have seen the tumble dryer intake and laughed at me, so I'm used to it.... I spend all of my available funds repairing things that go wrong if you have been a bad guy in a previous life, so I couldn't care less about street rep..... the guy lined up next to me at the POD isn't going to see under my bonnet on the line, is he.This question is just so I don't need to fork out £200 on a BMC CDA..... not that it's bothered me in the past.Cheers
Sidhu88 1
think about it this way, if u wrap a chicken/turkey in foil and put it in the oven, it wouldn't burn the outer layer of the chicken/turkey? it would heat it up on the inside however but thats due to the high temps in the oven. With that in mind, if u wrap whatever u want to in a couple layers of foil, shiny side outwards it could probably work. and if u did enough layers it would eventually get a bit more rigid. The heat should be reflected away leaving it cool enough on the inside. Try using some cardboard wrapped in foil for more rigidity
Sidhu88 1
also, there may be better stuff to use, but even if it isnt that good it'll still be better than nothing at alledit: u cud use a thermal blanket instead. u can get em at halfords
bungy 2
Get a piece of old heat shielding from another car at the scrappie and bend and form it to the shape you want. Will cost pennies....
The Monk 50
Cheers guys, never thought of heat shielding either.
maftec 0
Hay Munk, I thought it was just me making my car faster with offcuts and snot. I made an air ram by removing head lamp glass cutting hole in back of it. Then used an old air filter box ( cone like shape) which i riveted to the headlight, Fixed that to 8" of 110mm soil pipe ( domestic poo pipe, new and unused i may add). Then i had the quandri of reducing down to sweetly lip on to the MAF sensor. After turning the old workshop upside down i found an old roadcone. PERFECT. Cut it to the correct appature then cut in to the ends to make flaps then jubilie cliped on to the MAF sensor. Then wrapped the whole thing in silver bubble wrap (WICKS Radiator reflector). As it's a track only car im not bothered about air filters and headlights. After a good squeze at the pod i found that it acellerated harder from 60 - 90 mph than it does from 0-60. It didn't do that before. But the system has 2 venturi effects, direct air ram and insulation to keep the volumetric effiency up. SWEET. total cost £1.99 for a bag of rivetts.
