Brake problem (I think!) please help!

Recommended Posts

I have an interesting problem which I am hoping someone can help me get to the bottom.

I recently chnaged my steering wheel, and had 4 wheel laser alignment afterwards. I noticed that it only took 1 and 1/4 turns to full lock left and 1 and 3/4 right. So I removed the steering wheel, centered the steering rack and put the steering wheel back on.

Ever since then everytime I am turning left quickly, or on full lock to the left there is a HORRIBLE scraping sound. It appears to be the brake disc touching the caliper on closer isnepction, but this wasnt there before. I have r32 discs and uprated calipers on the front and there is VERY little space between the caliper and disc and it sppears the disc has a small amount of play in it. Is this normal? I though the disc should be on solid to the hub and you should not be able to move it at all?

Like I said the strange this is this has only become apparent now that I have centered the sterring rack? Any ideas??

yep, the wheel should push it into the hub...

usually there should be a guide screw that lines everything up, but once wheels are fitted, shouldnt matter as it push the wheel onto the brake disk, and in turn push to the hub...

could you have a wheel bearing problem?

There is definately play there, with the wheel off I can pull the disc so it contacts the caliper. I thought it may be a bearing issue (or a hub issue) but its odd as this problem has only shown up after I have centered the steering rack?

Could there be another reason for the sound to do with ARB/steering rack? Its definately not rubbing on the arch as I have raised the car significantly up and its as bad as ever
