Head rebuild (Fitting guides)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm in the process of rebuilding a spare VR6 head I've got..

I've got new followers, valves, valve seals and valve guides.. I plan on getting the head acid dipped and skimmed then rebuilding.

The local engine builders firm want £20 per valve guide for fitting.. The ones I pulled out were collarless, therefore, you could have ended up pushing them too far into the head.. My new replacements have collars which I assume are there to make fitting easier as they can only go in so far. When comparing old to new, the collars would sit the valve guide in the same position as the ones that have been removed..

Has anyone DIY fitted them?

Cheers

VW Tools 3120 and 3121 will make your life a lot easier. 3121 is the correct drift and the 3120 is a 7mm reamer for making them perfectly round again after fitment. If you don't ream them after fitting to the head, the valves will bind.

What valve spring remover did you use out of interest?

£120 just to fit guides is a rip off imo.

Back from the dead...

I used a drapper valve removal tool.. Big G clamp looking thing..

I dont suppose anyone has the VW tools I could borrow for a beer or 2?

I've completely stripped the head and had it skimmed so now I want to refit everything.. Brand new collared guides, supertech seals, new followers.. Should hopefully make a nice difference! :)

i will give you a tip as i did rebuild my head and i used a 50 tone press to press in the valve guides lol but the tip is to put the valve guides in the freezer over night which will help go in the head easy ! if not then buy some plummer freeze spary which work ok hope this helps !!
