Took my head off last night.

It hurts quite a bit now and I can't see where I'm going. :P

No, really, I'm stripping my engine down to fit new gaskets, seals, timing chains and big end shells. I took the head off my VR. It's done about 115k according to the clocks.

I noticed that the exhaust valves were covered in a white residue. Does anyone know what this is caused by.

Also, one of the exhaust valves was distinctly less white than the others. Is this something to worry about?

Cheers yellowslc. The big end shells look OK, no scoring or anything. I'm replacing them anyway. Same with the rings. I wasn't going to replace them, but I'm thinking I might as well. The tricky bit is checking the bore for warpage. Special tools required probably. They just appear to be surface scratches as you can't even feel them. Considering that No3 is the middle cylinder at the exhaust manifold side, could it possibly be a slight expansion of the block in that area that's caused the scratches.
