trackman 0
Took my head off last night. It hurts quite a bit now and I can't see where I'm going. No, really, I'm stripping my engine down to fit new gaskets, seals, timing chains and big end shells. I took the head off my VR. It's done about 115k according to the clocks.I noticed that the exhaust valves were covered in a white residue. Does anyone know what this is caused by.Also, one of the exhaust valves was distinctly less white than the others. Is this something to worry about?
trackman 0
Here's a pic.
yellowslc 0
Doesnt look bad at all. I would suggest at least hand lapping the valves/seats or a valve job. If you have the tools, check he valve guide play or take it somewhere. Normally the exhaust guides go long before the intakes do. Use NOTHING but OEM valve seals as the aftermarket ones are rubbish. badboyV6 4
Glad you mentioned that as i was thinking about renewing the valve seals....
yellowslc 0
you have a 50/50 chance of getting acceptable aftermarket valve seals, why risk it for a few dollars more ?
trackman 0
Further investigation after removing pistons.No.3 (same as discoloured valve) has scoring on the outer wall of the cylinder bore. You can't feel it, only see it. And so has the piston. Anyone any clues about what's causing this?Rich
yellowslc 0
Either the rings are out of spec, the cylinder is warped or you have rod bearing issues. Check all 3. For whatever reason, that piston is walking all over the cylinder.
trackman 0
Cheers yellowslc. The big end shells look OK, no scoring or anything. I'm replacing them anyway. Same with the rings. I wasn't going to replace them, but I'm thinking I might as well. The tricky bit is checking the bore for warpage. Special tools required probably. They just appear to be surface scratches as you can't even feel them. Considering that No3 is the middle cylinder at the exhaust manifold side, could it possibly be a slight expansion of the block in that area that's caused the scratches.Rich
