i once had a starting problem that agarage reckoned to be the starter....i didn't believe them and got a new battery and it sorted it.

what are the chances of the starter dying at the exact time of you fiddling with the stereo? and what are the chances of you somehow wearing down or even damaging the battery whilst fiddling with stereo? second scenario seems much more likely.

not saying they're deffo wrong...but heres another one. if the starter was dead you'd still be able to open your doors! i'd try charging the battery first.

Sounds like it's more likely to be the battery than the starter.

I would try removing the battery and give it a full charge (buy a battery charger if you don't have one already - they are so useful), then connect it back up (make sure terminals are secure!) and see how you go. Even if your battery is knackered, a full charge will give it enough juice to start the engine at least once, and this will 90% eliminate the starter, immobiliser or wiring as a cause of your problems.

If the car starts once, but fails to start after standing for a while, your problem is either:

- bad battery

- bad alternator

- a short-circuit somewhere. This could be internal to the starter, but I'd check the stereo wiring harness first, 'cos this is the only thing that's been recently "touched".

If you need a 2nd hand starter, you could try Volks-Apart:

Good luck!!

If its the starter motor I have one going spare. PM me! :-)

My starter went, turned out that the ground strap between the motor and the solenoid had corroded through. Got a second hand one and had it replaced. My old starter has now been sorted by putting on a new ground strap.
