paceo 22
my vr6 has a slight oil leak from the front of the engine, only leaks when its on my drive which is a slight hill, any flat surface and it wont leak!think its coming from the oil filter housing, the screw cap where you have the big plastic cap and 32mm nut on it to get the oil filter out or the 2x sensors on the oil cooler whatever they are for? it has been serviced recently.the screw cap with the 32mm nut has oil running down it i noticed! not a lot though! VDub_Steve 1
thats the oil filter housing the two sensors are pressure switches.the oil cooler is above the oil filter housing
VR6Pete 1,455
it will be the oil filter housing, or the oil cooler seals, these are prone to going hard overtime,
paceo 22
it will be the oil filter housing' date=' or the oil cooler seals, these are prone to going hard overtime,[/quote']the 32mm nut oil filter housing has been off as i put a new oil filter and seal on it, kind of looks like its coming from there where the seal is.regarding oil cooler seals can these be bought from anywhere? Lukey. 381
get proper VW ones, ive seen others and they arent always as good, different thicknesses, lips on them and mould marks that look weak etc
VR6Pete 1,455
get, genuine VW for the oilcooler seals
paceo 22
get' date=' genuine VW for the oilcooler seals [/quote']you got the part number for oil cooler seal?i actually think its the seal on the oil filter housing with the 32mm nut thats leaking?
Vw_owner 1
mine had this, would only do it when the back end was jacked up,i replaced my oil cooler seals and the knock sensor seal along with my oil filter the same time i did an oil change, you can do the oil cooler seals without stripping the front of the car,{on a corrado} its tight in there though
Lukey. 381
You can do it on a golf too without removing the front, it's a bit tight though and much easier from underneath, might be tempted to take the front off though for how easy it is (6 bolts) and make sure the mating surface on the block is super clean, last thing you want is to replace the seals and you find you trapped some muck between the cooler and block and it's leaking still, waste of brand new oil cos you'd have to empty it all out agian

Vw_owner 1
one big bolt straight through, i cant remember the size though, theres 2 seals, one goes between the block and the cooler {has little tabs/ears which is the top seal in pic} and the other goes between the cooler and the bolt flange. Nero Mk 2 8
All i'll say is be careful when doing this as its right around the crack pipe area and after a few years the connectors get a bit brittle.
paceo 22
many thanks guys anyone got the VW part numbers for these?
paceo 22
just checked the oil cooler and its as dry as a bone! the oil filter cap with the 32mm plastic nut is oily so im presuming its that seal, although its just been replaced with a new filter and seal (non genuine) :-(
Vw_owner 1
check for splits/cracks in the plastic, and becareful not to over tighten it..
paceo 22
check for splits/cracks in the plastic' date='and becareful not to over tighten it..[/quote']its a brand new oil filter casing!what NM does it need to be tightened to??
Lukey. 381
30Nm
paceo 22
30Nmtop man i only done it to 28nm i think, going to chuck a neal genuine VW seal in there and see what happens!
Lukey. 381
mine ever so slightly dripped after a little bit and i tweaked it to 33 or 34 Nm and it stopped it again, and hasnt dripped since. I think it was the seals just bedding in cos they were brand new genuine.
Vw_owner 1
also cover the seal in oil, this will stop it binding/gripping as you tighten it down, imagine trying to tighten a nut up against dry rubber, it would just grip and give you the wrong torque reading,
paceo 22
it is the oil cooler after all! so orders some new seals from VW £6 in total :-)what size is the nut on this?

paceo 22
cool just got the seals guys, does all the oil have to be drained from the sump? or can i do it without doing this?
Nero Mk 2 8
Nah, drain it mate, also watch out as its right near crack pipe area and it gets brittle
cabrioman 6
dont need to drain all the engine oil mate just take the cooler off replace the seals and top the oil and coolant up .....
