na vr6 drag race tuning?

Recommended Posts

hey all, had a great day at santapod yesterday in my brown mk1 cab vr6 and decided to make a few engine changes heres a list of what i plan can anyone give me some pointers?

im thinking

75bhp nos with electronic controller ( will the clutch be up to the job?)

uprated head gasket

268 cams

best cheap obd2 intake manifold mod?

gearbox final drive for better acceleration?

c2 map

r888 tyres

already have airfilter and full exhaust.

thanks.8-)

888's are a must with ->20psi

Cams will improve responce, a decent map will smooth out ur power delivery especially in conjunction with cams, and exhaust.

nos is cool and with a decent progressive controller set up correctly u should be fine on a standard box.

(i ran 200 bhp direct port on my last mk3 turbo vr with stock box and internals)

Also dont underestimate the improvements to be made from shedding a few unneccessary kilo's?!

Look under your carpets for those few 100's of a second sand bags used for sound proofing!! They all add up!

Finally probably one of the final mods would be to look at gearing, once u have ur car behaving how u plan a good 1/2-1 second can be reduced by minimising gear changes..

Come up to bug jam and say hi we'll all be there, qued up to run ;)

yea if ive got the cash defo.. ive been shaving weight stig(cheers for reply dude) got no rear seats or belts, even done the 250 mile round trip with only a can of tyre weld lol..

think i need more up top, i lost a few races in the last quarter after smashing em of the line!-)

maybe a lighter flywheel woulkd help!

jus checked, im not paid again until the last friday!-(

ive read the vr can take big shots of nos, would 200bhp drect with the controller be ok on a stock engine? sounds scary!

got an issue with the floor pan before i get carried away anyhow, the vr subframe is bending it upwards so i need to add some weight in metal and weld lol!

also sometimes when i start her up i get a little backfire in the inlet, my last vr done that tho! is it a prob? ive read before its a design flaw in the manifold or is that b**lo*ks?

Yeah it's bollards. Mine's backfired with 3 different designs of manifold :-) It's just the way they are. The little black plastic damper box attached to the idle valve doesn't like backfires very much. Blows it apart!

ah ok, its not a problem then... good, thanks kev.

cheers yakuza, spoke to stealth today and the mk3 gti 16v has the same final drive at 3.6... they also told me it will make a massive difference, way more than cams!!! def my next mod lol.

he also said 162 cams are the best? he said 168's do make the best peak power but 162's make more power everywhere exept at full bore making them way more usable, very useful info i think when everyone fits 168 and raves about em!

hey stig how did you strengthen your caddy floor? ive got convexed footwells ha! i was thinkin welding bars or 2inch lenghts of 5mm plate across the footwell inside. also maybe a length of plate spanning the jacking points and between the sub frame and footwell?

now thinking 150bhp of nos for next years retro show! i reckon i could hit mid twelves then, my cabby is pretty stock airfilter and exhaust an i ran a 14.6 at 94 with a 2.1 60ft!

I only got a caddy van vrt and mk2 r32 t. noel is the dude with the mk1 caddy!

The mk2 is running halex and caged so is pretty stiff! But with 600 lbs of torque its unknown if it will need more strength!

Get sum pics up of ur project?? :)

Theres a fella called noel who runs a grey mk1 pickup with a 1.8t.. Hes in low 12's and potentially far more to come! Hell probably be at bug jam too!

I'm pretty sure with a different driver that car ran 11.1 on it's first weekend out.

And if you can stretch to a pair of proper slicks over R888s you will notice a massive difference!

R888 are good as they are consistent, but they struggle to get up to temp quickly and are very stiff so break traction fairly easily. In my old car I ran 1.8 60fts on normal treads (launching on tick over too). James hodson runs 1.6 60fts on proper MH slicks!!

the thing people forget about is that semi slicks are made for track racing and not really for drags, full drag slicks allows for more flex in the tire wall allowing you to "spring/jump" off the line, also maintains excellent grip.

gearing, power to weight and practice is heavily under rated!!!

hi folks,,,,,,

im afraid i won`t be at bugjam this year due to work,,,,,,

james hodson done a 11.1 in my car at spring fest last year, my pb is a 11.3,,,,,

im running at vw action and i hope to be in the 10`s, with the right conditions,

im now running 120 octane and a 60 shot of nitrous so it will go one of 2 ways,,,,,,8-)

as stated above drag slicks are the way forward,,,,
