binliner 0
its held on by 2 allen bolts at the back... just undo those and unclip the connector as u pull it out and job done... you'll find the airbag light will stay on so you'll either need to buy a plug in resistor (awesome gti do them) that fools the ecu into thinking the airbag is still there or just disconnect the airbag light!you'll need a 24mm socket to take the steering wheel off
acf8181 0
just to warn you....you're supposed to tell your insurance co if you disable the airbag.
dubloke 4
and if you just disconnect the airbag warning light, it will then fail the mot. best to get the resistor from awesome as its only around a tenner!

antera309 3
A Mk4 steering wheel won't fit the mk3 steering column (spline pattern is different). It is possible to transplant in the Mk4 steering column, but this is major hassle and not worth it unless you're doing an entire Mk4 or TT dash conversion. The steering wheel from a 1999-2002 Cabrio model will fit though and the airbag will work too!as you can see, it is identical in appearance to the Mk4 GTI wheel. If removing your airbag altogether and fitting an aftermarket wheel, you will need a resistor (available from VW aftermarket stores like awesomegti) that plugs into the airbag connector and fools the airbag computer into thinking the airbag is still there. Your airbag light will then behave normally and your passenger airbag (if you have one) will work. When disconnecting your airbag, be sure to disconnect the battery (-) terminal first!![ Edited Fri Feb 25 2005, 11:57AM ]
binliner 0
When disconnecting your airbag' date=' be sure to disconnect the battery (-) terminal first!![/quote']why? Ive changed 2 now and haven't done that on either
Slim 0
As long as the ignition is off, the airbag won't go off.
acf8181 0
its just a precaution....airbag is a bomb basically so you wanna be very careful with it. you're also supposed to be very careful not to give it any large hits, and supposed to store it upright. dubloke 4
i've done 12 now and not had taken the battery terminal off at all! for those that want to do this, the correct procedure is to leave it disconnected for at least 24hrs to let any residual charges left in the bag electrics disapate before removal! as far as i can see there's no problem, mine has been sat upside down in a cupboard for 3 years now and not gone off! andrew is correct tho, the expolsive charge in its internals will give u a nasty burn if you mess with it or use it as a football!
