MK 5 GTI - any thoughts

Recommended Posts

morning all, currently considering placing an order for the new GTI (obviously not instead of the VR!) and wondered if any of you had driven this yet or what you think - I test drove it on sunday and thought it was fantastic. Thoughts appreciated!

If youve got the money then go for it!!! I think they are stunning cars. Not just for the looks but for the package as a whole. Would have to be a 3 dr though... All the reviews say they are top notch- havent heard that said for the GTI for quite a while.

I'd love a 3 door too but the missus wants 5. The choice is buy a reasonably practical GTI or buy a 3 door GTI and sell my VR and I sure as hell ain't doing that! To be honest, the 5 door actually looks pretty good I think (obviously not as nice as a 3 tho)...I'd love a 3 door too but when we're spending that kind of money it has to be a joint decision unfortunately!

I have been in the new GTI and it is definitely quicker than a standard VR6, despite all the extra weight. Very smooth and quiet too. You don't realise how fast you're going in it!!

I would quite happily buy one if I could afford the £20k-£22k price tag.

The styling is growing on me too. Definitely more interesting to look at than the conservatively-styled Audi A3.

The Mk5 has excellent crash safety too.

They've gone back to the tried-and tested 2.0 16v turbo setup and ditched the "fussy" 20v and I'm sure that this will be a good thing for reliability.

And you can look forward to a remap and an extra 50BHP as soon as your warranty runs out.

Have you seen one of the DSG ones yet? It would definitely be worth taking one of those for a test drive to see how it compares to the manual. An auto that changes gear faster than you can sounds almost too good to be true!!

it is a very nice car, but...its way too expensive for what it is.

£20k for a golf, no chance....thats scooby, evo, and even used porsche money. all these three are in another league in terms of engineering. for more practiaclity a e46 bmw is a better choice.

yep, I know what you're saying but went in a scooby once and hated it - quick but no refinement. Used Porsche yes, but how old are we talking about - old enough! btw, sub and amp sound great - cheers!

Yeah but youd lose a packet in depreciation on an E46!!! And they are as common as escorts these days... My mum had a 325 2001 model. It lost 10k in 2 years!!! New 3 series out in spring.... Wait for the next R32 :-) :-)

scooby, evo,= unreliability at times, expensive to run, twocers delight. porsche= older car, less depreciation , more expensive services. and bmw, how so more practical really? and again, older prob. i say go for the golf if you can afford it, i know what andrews saying, there are plenty of cars out there for 20k, but not all offer the same sort of package in total, and as has been said, the new gti reports are all good so far as i've heard and seen!

thing is, the DSG is an extra £1645 I think, and there is an even longer wait for those, also not tried and tested yet in terms of reliability . the time saving over a manual box in terms of change time is neglibible I think

but not exactly a good choice if you're after a practical family car... the jap cars need servicing every 5 mins at a ridiculous cost and you dont see many 5 door porsches!

have you considered an R32... kill 2 birds with one stone... still got the VR but in a modern (family) car

20k in todays terms is not too expensive for a Golf. Think if around 1990-1991. A 16V MK2 GTI was 16-16.5k. So in 14-15 years the price has gone up 3500-4k. Not much IMO.

And they're still cheaper than most used R32's!

my highline cost £22.5k new!

Yeah the DSG is supposed to be quicker same setup as the TT with 2 clutches. I read in a road test a few weeks ago though that apparently they couldnt get it to go any quicker than the manual. Although im sure on top gear they said they could?!?!? Anyway its still an achievment to get an auto to nearly match a manual!!

I wouln't count on it. Had an R32 and an S3 (Ok not quite a MK5 GTI but same sort of engine) and there's not much in it. You're looking at 23-24 hard driving and about 28-29 for the motorway. I'm guessing that the MK5 GTI won't be all that much better.
