oldmandon 1
Well i took my car to the garage today and had it connected to Vagcom and what did we find.......................................................NOTHING...........................luckily the car started playing up when it was at the garage, then cleared itself, then it played up again, then it cleared itself AGAIN. The guy working the vagcom said WTF is that all about........ he said "it's definitely not the coil pack, he said they don't do what your car is doing, when they go they just go" He seems to think it's possibly a fuel relay getting hot creating a fault, then cooling down curing the fault then getting warm again........But not 100% sure. Said he had it happen on a mk3 GTi a few years back, same fault and it was the secondary fuel relay........Now just need to get the relays out and see if it is!!!!!!!!!!!!! VR6Pete 1,455
Sure its not the MAF?
J5KE F 0
A bloody pain dude! I hate intermittent faults!
oldmandon 1
He didn't mention anything about the MAF............ I'll try what he said and see what happens. He used to have a business with another guy specialising in tuning VAG cars, but mainly VW's. He currently works as a workshop manager for a car sales specialising in second hand VW's, he's quite a clever guy and funny with it. But it doesn't mean he can't be wrong. I only mention this to illustrate that I'm hopefully taking advice from someone in the know!!!!!!!! Still take advice from here anydayI'm hoping it will be something as simple as a relay. Is there anyway of checking a MAF or is it a case of changing one for another as a trial and error? Other than that, I'll break it if it's gonna be a pain in the arse.......won't be going very far though as I'll be on the hunt for another, pref a 3dr highline model. VR6Pete 1,455
When it's Playing up just unplug it. If it runs exactly the same, it's a good indication that it's that, if it runs worse / stalls upon unplugging it then it's usually an indication it's doing something... MAF faults are not picked up by vagcom either. I had an intermittent running fault with my mk2 vr6 (obd2) one minute it would red line happily then start running like a dog, misfiring, no power etc.. Upon closer inspection I noticed a little bit of the element had partly snapped off! Can pick 2nd ones for about 20 quid
J5KE F 0
Yeah my maf plug was foofed and same issues!

oldmandon 1
Now it's getting annoying............................Pulled ALL the relays, nothing.......the only one that stalled it wasn't the fuel relay??!!!!!!!!!!. So I tried pulling the plug off the MAF......Nothing. In that unplugging the MAF made it stutter more. So I tried spraying a fine mist of water on the coil pack whilst it was running fine, and it started to arc on the plug lead that goes to the front right cylinder, so I dried it all off then waited for the engine to re-creat its fault so I could pull the plug lead off the coil pack and see if it stayed the same or got worse. Guess what, the engine wouldn't re-creat the fault, so I thought I'll go for a blast and see if that will cause it. Just as I'm getting back home (150yrds away) the fault started. Sweet I thought, pulled up at the house, popped the bonnet and the engine cured its fault...B*****D So still haven't sussed it...........
oldmandon 1
GOT IT...I Think.............Took three days for the fault to come back and stay long enough for me to get the bonnet open and try pulling the plug leads off the coilpack............when I pulled the leads off (as you look into the engine) front middle, front right, rear left and rear middle the engine stuttered even more, but when I pulled the leads off front left and rear right there was no difference in the engine at all, even with both leads off!!!!!! So I'm guessing that seeing as there was no difference when these two leads were pulled, that the coilpack was not working on both of these cylinders, meaning my coilpack is F****d........Would anyone like to confirm this!!!!?????But it is weird, as the problem is intermittent, because it hasn't done it for the rest of the day!!!!!!!!!! Aren't coilpacks just supposed to pack in??
spadam 7
Could also be your leads arcing out have you got some leads you could try in place of the supposedly faulty ones.
oldmandon 1
the leads aren't that old, I bought them from Dubpower through the forum less than 3000 miles ago, so I had pretty much discounted them, and the plugs are about the same age..........the coilpack though is original, whats really annoying is I had a spare coilpack i bought early this year after reading about the problems they cause, then my mates coilpack jacked in so I sold it to him, for him to go and sell his car a month later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
