I've got a problem and not sure what it could be - I was driving yesterday down the north circular done about 10 miles and the engine just died coasted for about 30 secs and restarted picked up straight away, this happened 5 times before I reached my destination, left the car for a couple of hours and than came home with no probs at all, I only drive her on the weekends and been on the track once with no probs, new coil pack about 8 months ago, new plugs, leads and oil change about a month ago, only 55,000 on the clock (95) only thing I noticed was that the coolant level had dropped about an inch below the min line, but the temp gauge never once went over the half way mark...

Any ideas?

It's hard to tell without hearing/seeing the symptoms or doing a Vag-com sweep. As you've changed the common fault area's of coil pack and leads it is worth checking why you've lost coolant. You can check your oil filler cap for mayonnaise or get a sniff test done on your coolant itself. Has the fuel been left to go stale in the tank and has the fuel filter been changed. After running the car does the fuel cap become difficult to remove?

Cheers Bungy, no the fuel cap is as loose as usual, no mayonnaise. The fuel filter hasn't been changed. It done exactly the same thing today, done about 10 miles fine and on the way back she was murder conked out about 10 times taking longer to restart each time. Also been told that it could be my crankshaft sensor? But as you said a quick plug into a VAG might narrow things down...

yeah would check it with vag-com for sure as there are plenty of possibles !! I had something similar on mine and it turned out to be the factory immobiliser had gone we changed the ignition coil as thats the most obvious part to fail and it didnt help in the end we had to remove the immobiliser request from the ecu and that did come up as a fault code but only once when checking !

Nice one bungy I've got a guy down my way who's got one I'm gonna try and see him this week if I get an early one from work.

Cheers Ben, interesting point as I have been having probs with my alarm but it's aftermarket Sigma which will prob have two cuts, I know for sure one is Ignition, if the second is the fuel pump then there's a chance that could be the problem, but the only thing steering me away from that is it only seems to happen after a long drive and then comes back after a 5 min cool down...

I'm gonna VAG-com it and hopefully if I find the problem I'll let you know

Cheers lads
