goodboy1451 0
I have a question on the VR6. It appears that some models have coilpack ignition while others have Distributor. Would like to understand what is the pro and cons of one vs the other. Anyone able to enlighten...
acf8181 0
only '92 (golf this is) have dizzy. coilpack is better IMO, but costs more if it does die.
pete8tch 0
now i on the other hand believe the dizzy is better , because looking on here the no of coil pack probs and the cost as andy says
VRmonster 1
ha ha. ive just been thinking about converting to coilpack as im getting a stand alone ecu and would prefer the neater coilpack setup, but on second reconing, it would only make my life worse as id be forever changing the damn things, lol. acf8181 0
coilpack failures aren't as rare as you'd think (on vr6's...they are on some seats mind). but dizzy's often let water in and screw up. coilpack is great when its working.
VRmonster 1
ok, so im guessing all i need to swap over is.upper chain cover (coilpack version)single row cam sprockets (without dizzy sender, with cam position sensor)single row chain, (and late parts)coilpack (and appropriate harness with stand alone.)coilpack designed leads.not missing anything or buying anything i dont need am i? may as well swap for the neater option if im rebuilding the engine. acf8181 0
not quite, only '97 on vr6's had single row top chains, so you wouldn't need to change that.i'd have thought you'd need (and this is a guess now)...coilpack,top chain cover, top sproket(s),engine wiring loom.leads will be fine for both, you'll just drop the 7th lead. VRmonster 1
k, well i wont be doing this till i wire the stand alone engine management, so the loom is ok, and which are best single row or double row chains. may as well get the better one in as my engine will be apart anyhow. i also just bought a top chain cover from j.corallo. so im getting there. lol. cheers andy, you are the OBD master, lol
pete8tch 0
ah obd1 kenobi then lol.
acf8181 0
well, they updated to single row top chain so you gotta presume there was a reason for it...most likely to reduce wear on the runners.
VRmonster 1
ah obd1 kenobi then lol.omg, i was thinking exactly that right after i posted it, lol.and i think ill source the single row setup. must be better. i can hear my chains around the 1500 revs area now. or at leas i think its the chains, it just ads to the scraping piston noise. think my rings have fallen off. lol.
