p0u1 14 Posted November 7, 2011 Report Share Posted November 7, 2011 have you reblead the system or flushed it with new p/s steering fluid, shouldn't need to but it may of gunked up, i would try do something to clean it out first before changing parts. just hope you dont have the wrong ps fluid in there not the oem VW fluid and damaged the pump and steering rack,and the belt is non adjustable, it stretches through its life and will need changing at some point, the stretch is compensated for by the tensioner, the highest pulley wheel on the belt, if that's fully unsprung and not doing its job the belt will slip and cause problems with your water pump, alternator, ps pump, and possibly your ac pump if you have it, so check the tensioner and check to see the belts nice and tight if it if look else were.but i wouldn't take one mans opinion on your vr6, i dont know who you had, but the specialist i had round was lost on my vr6 because it was the first he had seen. vr6_super 0 Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Share Posted November 8, 2011 The engine has only done around 20-25k at most so I wouldnt expect it to be slipping this early?Tho in saying that I wouldnt have expected the power steering pump to have fekd this early to, unknown as to whether it is the original or came as part of new engine as I didnt have it when new engine fitted.I think it is the wrong fluid that is in there also because when VW garage had a look they said the fluid was brown, i think they said it was atf that was in it, and I assume its hydraulic fluid thats supposed to be in it? Driving home after aa guy was out felt ok barring the heavy wheel. Also when its stationery you can here a squealing like the pump wants to do something.Think I might get a pump first then see where we stand. He mentioned something about its easier turning to the left than it is to the right so he said something about the valves in the rack? He reckons there may be a block in the system and says to flush out the old fluid and put in the correct stuff and see if that does any good. He did say the pump is trying to work so think that there could be a block and a flush and new CORRECT fluid mite make a difference. Lets see anyway. Lukey. 381 Posted November 12, 2011 Report Share Posted November 12, 2011 if it had atf in it theres every possibility all the seals and valves are fooked, Vw do a rebuild kit for the rack its about 90 quid.If the fliud was anything but green its gonna have had atf even if its not all atf, and its known for destroying the seals, it does say only fill with green VW fluid and for once the warning isnt just so you go get genuine parts, its the only fluid that works :-)If you ask for steering fluid in a dealers they only do the one, and one bottle will fill the system, so maybe get 2 and empty, refill, circulate then empty again and refill with the second bottle.hope the green fluid is all you need mate or it may get expensive Link to post Share on other sites

Dont know what fixed the problem and I dont care. The steering rack pump and hoses all working fine. No veering anymore and no clicking when I turn the wheel, even when stationary.Dont know how long the replacement parts will hold for but for the time being its looking good.Cheers all for replies and suggestions.
