trackman 0
Warren,I've got the same leaky breather pipe (dripping onto the exhaust manifold), except mines OBD1. Priced it up with VW and they said the same (ie whole inlet pipe). Didn't want to believe that I had to buy it all, so looked for part numbers on the pipe and switch-type-thingy. Came up trumps, both bits cost me around £20. Check this thread at page 3/4.http://www.vr6oc.com/forum_viewtopic.php?2.40042.20Like I said mines OBD1, but worth a try if you can find the part numbers. They might even be the same.Rich
badboyV6 4
Nice one Rich- ill give them a shout tomorrow :-)
sixpot 0
That sounds like a familiar problem,i've noticed my pipe is split where it joins the one way valve (UFO) thing, and I get a little bit of smoke now and again.I put it down to worn valve stem oil seals, and I'm about to embark on a full engine stripdown (both timing chains, new clutch, guides tensioners etc etc..) but after reading this I may try and change the hose first, and see what results I get.BTW mine is only on 82,000 miles, which I think is a bit low for worn valve stem seals! might be OK after all. badboyV6 4
I think its the UFO thing thats fooked- its supposed to be a vacuum of sorts - im going to see if ford have one in stock tomorrow. Ive also asked a mechanic friend (whos a VW specialst) waiting for his reply :-)

stu h 0
is it the ufo thing at the front right of the inlet manifold?
sixpot 0
Nope! it comes out of the rocker cover on the back left, and joins into the elbow just before the TB.
sixpot 0
I think you are thinking of the fuel pressure regulator on the end of the fuel rail (round gizmo)

badboyV6 4
OK ive been back and forth on this and still havent solved it. From what i can gather the UFO object is a flametrap of sorts and the gauze is packed in the cam cover. My cam cover gasket is weeping slightly so i will check the gauze soon. Ill probably do this though as soon as my new car arrives.... Heads coming off then for lots of new parts :-)
trackman 0
Warren, my ufo valve is defo just a plastic tube with a pretend electrical connector. There's no electronics or anything. My guess is that it's a dummy replacement for a proper valve possibly fitted for US emissions or something. Given that, there's nothing much can go wrong with it. What's happened on mine is that over time the rubber pipe from the cam cover to the ufo valve has gone soft, and it's no longer sealing around the joint to the ufo valve, so it drips onto the exhaust manifold. badboyV6 4
Ive spoken to my local VW / Audi specialist again and he convinced its seals- i just cant understand why it wont do it all the time if the seals were fooked.... Hes the one who told me that the UFO object that sits right next to the cam cover is a flametrap. He said 1 way to cure the oil dripping is to use a couple of jubilee clips on the middle joints that should seal. My argumant is though surely VW didnt intend on oil pissing through into the air inlet! Even if that does stop the dripping i might do what binliner did and use a aftermarket breather pipe or catch tank....
Geastb 0
Any updates on this Warren? Did you find the problem? Sounds like the same problem i have on mine!
badboyV6 4
I replaced that UFO thingy and used jubillee clips on the pipe going in- as the pipe was leaking in places and it worked!!!!! It doesnt seem to be doing it anymore...and its not pissing oil on my manifold either giving that stinky oil burning smell!! Got to be worth a shot on yours for that price i spose. Ive heard otherpeople say theres does it as well, but my guess is if its still doing it after then it is seals- like the garage did tell me to begin with it is rare for the seals to go on these engines, especially at 70k,
Geastb 0
Have you got the part numbers? Did you replace just the UFO bit or did you have to get the whole lot?
badboyV6 4
NO just the UFO part- got it from euro carparts- 30 quid odd.... And use jubillee clips on each of the joints...VW stealers wanted 130 quid + VAT for the whoole inlet as thats how you have to buy it!!! I think you can get the part from Ford too so i learned the other day from ACF and Ingham.... :-)
Geastb 0
Whats the part actually called? I don't want to go to the ford/euro parts dept and ask for a UFO thingy! lol
