When in the 1000 to 2000ish RPM range the car tends to stutter does any 1 know why this is cheers..

Check your plugs & leads then look at your coilpack.

when looking at the leads and plugs is there any thing in particular that i look out for....as for the fuel cleaner is this the injecta plus...

Look out for arching. You should see/hear it! Usually place for it to happen is at either end of the plugs i.e. coilpack or plug end.

Could be the cam sensor too but check for arcing first using a fine water spray.

i ve got a '94 golf VR6 with the same problem. mine tends to do it regardless of how many RPM's the engines doing, and it makes the head lights flicker 2? i ve changed the leads but was told the plugs were fine, the problem persists. i checked the coil pack for arcing ie spraying a mist of water on it and that seemed to be ok. not sure what to look at next? thought about taking the risk and changing the coil pack any way.

I would change the plugs anyway if they haven't been done for a while. Have you plugged into vag-com diagnostics to check thet your sensors are functioning properly? Misfires on vr6s can be caused by a number of things.

yeah, it wouldn't effect the lights i don't think...i'd be inclined to think its a battery connection prob, maybe a loose earth wire, on yours silverline.

first thing to do with a stutter is to spray water lightly onto the leads and coilpack at night to see if theres any sparks.

next thing i'd do is is clean the ISV (obd1) and TB. then i'd also change the fuel filter (helped mine a bit) as its costs very little.

then if it was still doing it i'd plug it into vag-com.

i had a stuttering prob for ages, in the end it turned out that the magnet for the hall (camshaft/impulse) sender was coming apart....this showed up as a intermitant fault before eventually becoming a full time fault (at which point car went onto safe mode). prob i had was it was so intermitant at first that although it showed a fault code it was thought to be a red herring.

i did speak to VW about plugging it into their vag-com but they said all it would say is that theres a miss fire, it wouldn't say what is at fault. there r stacks of solutions to the problem, dont know where to start!

just tried the water mist on the coil pack and its definately not arcing. i have noticed that it only seems to miss when the car is warm? im stummped. maybe the fault with the lights and the missing are different faults?

MSV - I was referring to Injecta Plus, it's damn good stuff!

That's bullsh*t if it's being caused by a bad sensor.

ive checked the leads and coil pack and there are no sparks, so wat should i look at next....will check the spark plugs tomorrow and possibly change the fuel filter. any thing else i should look at....o yeh forgot to mention that when the car was at stealth vince said that there was an intermittant fault with the mass air flow meter could this also cause the stutter

mightyvr6, i think they only meant with regard the coil pack. my local garage has a diagnostic tool which should pick up any faults but would it be best to put it on a vag-com any way?

silverline-Yes that is correct. The coilpack is not monitored by the ecu so won't show a fault code. If your local garage has bosch diagnostics go for it as it should reveal if there are any sensors not functioning.

MSV83- Yep, a faulty maf does indeed cause stuttering/misfiring but only diagnostics would confirm this.

if not plugs connected properly to leads,maybe ISV clean,hall sender,crank positoin sensor.worthwhile going all round the enginebay/fusebox checking and cleaning all connections.

isv - i think is the idle stabilising valve

tb - throttle body.

i would forget all that and check that you have good engine earths if the lights flicker this is almost certainly a poor connrction. clean the points of earth and check that they are on the battery properly

talking about poor connections the battery was replaced just before i bought the car. doesn't the vr6 have a strange ecu it doesn't have a self learn system or something? when the battery was removed the ecu may not of been reprogramed properly?

to be sure i'd get the codes checked again (vw aren't the only place that do it, specialists can) and then replace it.

well the good news is that the stutter has gone, but left a dent in the pocket...fuckin £83 for the mass air flow meter ~ . should be ok from now

i had a diagnostic run on the golf this morning 4 faults appeared! the main 1 was 00532 - supply voltage to high, it was charging at 17.5 volts!!! so i went straight out and bought a new regulator to fit to the alternator hoping this is the root of my trouble. how hard is the alternator to remove?
