i ran a search before, someone had a similar problem but not the same as mine. mine doesnt do it on over run. it only does it in first as well, when i set off not 2nd or so on revving up. and revving on the spot is clean, there is also no oil traces in the exhaust or on the back of the car?

cheers, anyone able to shed some light on the problem, im going to clean the breathers and the inlet a bit see if that makes a difference. doubt rings as there isnt any constant smoke, an the head gasket seams fine, no white smoke or coolant loss.

no this isnt condensation, it looks like blue smoke but i cant be too sure as im driving all the time and dont get to see the back. it might look blue because of the headlights from the car behind shining through it. ive also noticed little black carbon like deposits on the back of the car, but i think all cars do this dont they?

Definitely go for the Syntha Silver semi synth.

My car (97 VR with 90k) burned 1.7 litres per 1000 miles on the fully synthetic Syntha gold. Switched to semi silver and now do 0.5 litres per 1000, which is acceptable according to the handbook.

VW recommend the fully synthetic, which is fine for a brand new VR, however when the miles rack up and the engine loosens, the lower viscosity means it p*sses through the engine.

Just stick your finger in the pipe and see if its slimy - I've seen highish mileage VRs running fully synth and oil is literally dripping out the back! If so, change to semi and see what happens.

Also, get someone to follow you and see what colour the smoke really is. I always end up trying to convince myself that my car is smoking at this time of year - even though I know it's condensation due to the damp!

You could also check the plugs and see if there is any oil fouling on them. This can mean problems with valves / rings / oil seals etc. Don't panic yet though - you may just need to switch oil!

:P

thats a bit thin really, unless your vr has mega low mileage. go to your local gsf car parts and get some synta silver. oh...one more thing, never trust any advice from vw, 9 times out of 10 its wrong.

read something that i found quite funny in a back issue of autosport magazine the other day....one of the writers used to own a lotus elan back in the '70's, and felt it used a lot of oil. he saw the great, late, lotus boss colin chapman in the car park at a GP and told him it was using a fair bit...chapman responded by saying 'of course it uses oil, what do you think is lubricating it'!....is it just me or does that make sense! lol

Might be the vacuum vlave that connects to the Rocker cover- Ive got exactly the same problem- and im trying to figure out whather its head off time (at 68k!!!) or something stupid.... My theory so far is the engine reduces crankcase pressure with the use of a vacuun valve that sits at the top of the block. A small diaphragm is inside the valve and this is controlled by the vacuum of the air intake. My valve doesnt seem to do feck all- and ive got quite a lot of all in the pipe an around the air intake.... PM. See the thread - Reconditoioning VR6 head'
