The old argument from the oil companies is that the higher graded fuels have more/better cleaning additives and as such, is the justification behind the cost increase. I suppose it's a bit like adding water/meth and keeping your engine cleaner for longer. Think modern VW's pretty much state use 98 RON+ nowadays, everything helps to avoid detonation at the end of the day, I started sticking with it after importing some Japanese turbo cars that are mapped for 100.
