spadam 7
Well as you know i have been starting to refurb some alloys. Currently there coated in primer ready for paint.Im know think of paying the extra and getting them powdercoated. What are peoples opions on powdercoating. Have read a few articles saying that it weakens the wheel. I have been quoted £150 for a set of 4 wheels to be powdercoated. Im just concious that if i spray them myself they will never look as good and dont want to be laughed at at ultimate dubs.Should i get them powdercoated or contiune with the DIY refurb. russj249 2
I had my BBS rx2 centres powder coated by a local company. I paid 80 quid for the 4 (with just the centres and not the rims) they bead blasted them for me (shot blasting was too harsh) and then powder coated them in a grey I chose. It's a company my dad uses with his line of work, which is fire protection, and these are the people that coat the containers that house the fire equipment on some oil rigs and power stations, so a proper hard, good finish.Ive had them a couple of years now and not a scratch or a blemish. Brake dust comes straight off with just a soapy sponge. I'll post a pic in a min of the wheels if I can find a pic.On the other hand, my boss had his Range Rover Sport wheels painted about 6 months ago for the second time (non genuine 22inch wheels) and this has already started to flake in some areas. spadam 7
Look really good. think i may just get them powderciated for durability. may ring around and find somewhere cheaper though.
russj249 2
Your a bit far from me otherwise I'd pass the details on.. and as for durability, that picture was taken this summer at our caravan in Wales, about 2 years after they were refurbed. Just been cleaned with warm soapy water, no chemicals, and brake dust doesn't stick.

spadam 7
Im just worried about all the horror stories of powdercoating weakening wheels due to the heat process. Really dont want my wheels to crack/ break on me. Quick google search brings up a whole hose of forums threads of wheels breaking due to powdercoating?
Ben Seabrook 4
never heard of any problems or met anyone who has had this happen mate ! plus I am sure if there was a problem then they wouldn't continue to powdercoat wheels !

Lukey. 381
the only thing i can say thats bad about powder coating is if you do kerb/damage them it will chip off in a big chunk. When i had new tyres fitted they prised the tyre on with a bar on one wheel and chipped a chunk off the rim, didnt notice at the time as it was dark, found it next morning, too late to go back :-(ive had to just dab the chips in with some of my gfs chrome effect nail varnish, its a good match on the clean wheels, you can see it stood looking at them, unless you're looking close up
