DrRich 1
I'm thinking of buying one of these (the GSS430 seems to be the recommended model) but have read differing opinions regarding whether it is necessary to keep the tank above 1/4 full. That would be doable but a bit of a hassle and I would find myself always worrying about running too low going round a left hand bend (perhaps in a 'spirited' fashion) and starving the pump and risking it burning out.I've looked at a few threads where people say it should be mounted low in the swirl pot and I'm sure I could manage that - I've currently got a spare pump in pieces on the bench and it looks reasonable enough - but would that be enough?Any thoughts / reassurance would be welcomed!Cheers for your time... legvw 0
You could use an external fuel swirl pot, have the original vr pump feeding it, then run the walbro from it to the fuel rail. That would eliminate any starvation issues.I have 1 for sale?
russj249 2
When I fitted my HRC performance fuel pump, I had this issue.. basically anywhere close to the red on gauge and going round a slow right hander, like a 90 degree junction type thig, it would stutter, took me a while to work out as when it stuttered you try to stop it cutting out with more accelerator, yet this just made it use the remaining fuel quicker and would just clonk out. When it stuttered and i don't touch pedals, pressure used to build back up better and would carry on running.Basically as Paul has said, if it ever did this at full revs having a play with someone, somethings going to go wrong soon enough. If I was you, I would take Paul's swirl pot to make sure this doesn't happen.
VIW28 29
^^^^ Same here!My new setup will be using an 034 Motorsport FP34 swirl tank with 044 pump. Ive tried the Walbro, the external 044 and finally the in tank HRC. First two were noisy and the last one you had to keep minimum of 1/4 tank.
craggsy 91
I had my walbro right down the bottom of the in tank swirl pot and had no problems at all
russj249 2
Don't the walbro's have a little spout at the bottom? Mine is kind of flush, but only to the mesh that the standard pump sucks from? Also my HRC one is silent, especially for 255lph I'd say its quieter than the standard pump, but even with a modified adapter to fit it directly into the standard pump housing etc it still don't like under 1/4 of a tank. DrRich 1
Wow - thanks for such a rapid and helpful response everyone. So is the external swirl pot a separate unit - ie not the part from the original pump housing? How much are these?
VIW28 29
It is indeed, the 034 one is very good. Well made and nice fitment. Find it here http://www.034motorsport.com/fuel-injection-solutions-fuel-pumps-fully-enclosed-fp34-044-fuel-surge-tank-p-21527.html and if you fancy one give me a shout

michael5556 247
I have the Bosch 044 and it's pretty good but I just keep it over half a tank
FishWick 21
Just to clarify, it's the GSS340 you need, not 430 ;-)Even mounted right at the bottom of the pump housing it will still surge. I've been using them for years and not yet come up with a solution for it.It's quite simple really. Walbro need to replicate the OE pump's return system, but they won't for what ever reason. The OE pump has a feed from the return swirl pot directly into the pump head. The Walbro does not, which is why it surges.
DrRich 1
Brilliant! Thanks everyone for all the genuinely helpful replies. Suppose I'll just have to get used to the idea of keeping topped up...First five replies within a couple of hours of posting - feels good to be part of this community! FishWick 21
With my GSS340 mounted as low as possible, I only ever got surging when below the red and when accelerating hard round a corner. It's more of an irritation than a significant problem and doesn't harm the engine.
