is it worth using shell optimax

Recommended Posts

Well the VW/Audi specialist i deal with tell me not to use anything else- (mind you my cars chipped) It is expensive though. I think there is a difference - the car feels more responsive. Ive been using 97 RON super unleaded too. I suppose it depends on how flush your feeling.... It doesnt do any hard using normal unleaded.

Sorry, I know I'm dragging this up after a few days. Don't believe the hype.

Higher octane levels in fuel allow you to run a higher compression ratio without getting knocking (partial fuel combustion). Highly tuned engines tend to run high compression ratios, thus needing high-octane fuel.

The VR6 runs 10:1, not particularly high. I use 95 RON in mine and I don't get any knocking, so there's no advantage in me using higher octane fuel. There's nothing in it to actually produce more power.

It only costs about 4p a litre more' date=' if you put in 40 litres, that's just an extra £1.60. I'm quite happy to pay that knowing my car's running on the best fuel available.

well said but i think that texico superplus is better (optimax loses octain as sits in tank )

Back on the Optimax subject, Evo mag did a 1000 mile test on 3 different cars a couple of years ago and recorded tiny improvements in performance on all 3.

The real advantage was that Optimax contains a cleaning agent and photos of the valve backs and piston crowns showed a marked reduction in carbon deposits after using Optimax. It seemed to actually get rid of most of the build up of gunk in all 3 engines.

I've used it ever since.
