So, i'm still trying to sort the missfire and im thinking i need a new cam sensor. Ive cleaned it a couple of times and it stopped missfiring briefly. My question is- whats meant to happen when its unplugged? I unplugged mine and it just ran/ticked-over the same. Anyone help?

Thats what i did- unplugged it then started it. It started and ran as normal. I plugged and unplugged it a few times with it running but nothing changed. I didnt drive it though just had it running.

Hmm very odd. Can't say I've actually tried in the vr6, but normally if you unplug one or the other it won't start, unless the cam and crank sensors line up, it won't fire, but I can't be sure.

Also I would think that cam sensor would come up as a fault, so maybe get it plugged in, I would have thought that it would come up with a code such as cam sensor incorrect signal or no signal etc, although when you do test it, because the engine isn't running, a code for engine speed sensor will come up anyway. Erm... Lol maybe get a know working one and try it in there?

There is a guy not far who's been breaking a highline. Ive had a few bits off him and he has a cam sensor. I just need to pick it up. I thought id try and find out for definite if it is this though.

I got the blue temp sensor off him to try and cure another problem my car has. Once the engine is warm, if i turn it off then come to it while its still warm its a pig to start. Its as though it floods itself. It turns over for 4 or 5 seconds before it fires. When i first got the car i thought it was crank sensor so replaced that but still the same. Its still the same now with the replaced temp sensor. I'm now wondering if the 2 issues are related- cam sensor?

Well, i've sorted the missfire. My pcv had cracked and oil from the breather was leaking down into the spark plug and ht lead and causing the missfire. I think that was the problem anyway. The next ht lead accross was not pushed onto the plug properly so may have been that. Also put some brand new super thick HT leads on. Anyway its not missfiring now. Maybe a combination of the 3 have cured it.

  • 3 weeks later...

Right, here's the next problem.- I changed the water pump last week as there was play in the bearings. I also changed the alternator as the one that was on had the wrong pulley. Anyway thats all sorted but now the car idles at 1000rpm instead of 850. If i rev it hard it settles to how it should be. Ive cleaned the isv today but doubted it was that anyway as id already cleaned it a few months back. Its as though the auto choke is jamming. If i turn the engine off then restart it, its the same until i rev it hard again. The second issue is another slight missfire type issue that occurs when i take my foot off the accelerator. Both of these issues have been since i did the pump and alternator. Im thinking its due to me jacking the engine up but cant pinpoint what. Any help guys?? thanks

Sorted now. I put the other alternator back on but swapped the pulleys so i had the 7 ribbed (correct) one. So the car now ticks over as it should. Strange. I'm assuming the alternator i put on was either too high or too low ampage. They're both valeo and don't state what ampage they are.
