Car starting and idling issues

Recommended Posts

I bought this car a month ago, a Golf mk3 Auto VR6 obd2, completely standard. I have given the car a full service and it drove well. Then I noticed that one of the ht leads had a tear in the rubber so decided to change them. The car drove amazingly well changed down better than ever and was fun to drive. Then all of a sudden about 2 days later it went back to similar power of before however now it wont idle properly. I fitted a milltek cat back system and got the leads changed. No difference in fact I would say worse idling. Today the car started but sounded like a bag of bolts, I checked the plugs and leads were in right and tried to restart, no difference. Now it wont start at all. This could be the coil pack, Crank position sensor etc. Ideally need someone local to Crowborough, East sussex to pop over with VAGCOM and see whats going on. Any help is much appreciated.

It could be the coil pack, they fail all the time. You can check by getting it running (if possible) in the dark and then spraying a fine mist of water of the coil pack, if you see it arcing lots, then there is a good chance that your coilpack is shot. My car sounded like it was stuttering when my coilpack went, new one on, covered it in epoxy and good as new!

If you cannot get hold of VAGCOM or do not know where to start with it, you can get a fault code reader from eBay for under £20. It will allow you to read the codes and clear them. I have one in my glove box that I can just plug in, do a quick scan and try and remedy the problems.

This is the one I have and it kicks out the same faults that my VAGCOM program found
