Daverse 175
Hi chaps,Bit of a problem.. today I got my new VR, and driving it back under a bit of welly it would give off a puff of blue smoke. Me thinking this is was the valve seals, didnt think much of it and drove it steadily home. But tonight i took it for a drive and pulling away from a junction at low revs theres blue and white smoke billowing from the exhaust, just couldnt see out of my rear view mirror. So im thinking the head gaskets gone, theres no mayo ib the oil cap yet, but unless the block / head has cracked thats got to be it surely? I've been on here for too long to know thats got to be it, but is there anything else it could be? Problem is im away for the weekend and got a 100 mile journey back home and its obviously in no state to drive, so its a bit frustating!!!Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated! Thanks, dave
michael5556 247
Is there any oil in your coolant bottle? It does sound a bit dodgy like a headgasket.
Daverse 175
Not yet, the water was still under pressure, and by the time the engine would have cooled down it was dark, and ive made the mistake of opening the bottle under pressure before! I'll do it in the morning. May just break it for parts yet.
michael5556 247
If its broken I might be interested.. Text me in the morning if you still have my number.
Daverse 175
Will do, you after the whole lot or just specific parts? To be honest i have the bolts, gasket e.t.c to do it spare, just not sure what the condition of the head is yet.
ashmk3 0
Could be the oil cooler they sometimes leak but yours sounds more gasket related.
Daverse 175
Yeah thats a good point ash, i have one of them spare too, (I need a clearout!) So might give that a whirl first. Dont want to start chucking money at it if i have to do the inevitable though
michael5556 247
Depending on price as I need another project soon
VIW28 29
Ususally smoke under load is a sign of worn rings, smoke on the overun is valve stem oil seals. OIl cooler is also a possible source as suggested! If it has 80k + miles on it it will more than likely need a HG anyhow. Best do a compression test to see how it fairs
legvw 0
Best thing to do, if you have it, is to block test it, with the blue liquid and tool thing you can get in a kit, have a search on eBay mate.
Daverse 175
It wouldn't burn water if the rings had gone? Im going to get some radweld and hopefully it can get me home so i can start testing then.
legvw 0
The block test tests for combustion leaks in the engine, I.e. if the h/g has failed or you have a cracked block/head.Does it use oil? It could be rings, does it smell oily?
Lukey. 381
Ive heard good things about steel seal, as far as these kind of treatments go.
Daverse 175
Ive got rad weld for the water and some similar stuff for oil. Does anyone know if i really have to take the top head hose off and the thermostat or can i just put it in the header?
Lukey. 381
The reason it says that is so it is properly circulated and doesn't just sit in the header tank
