varr6pete 0
Hi Guys, my VR6 sleeper (Golf GL badge, steel wheels etc) is no longer my daily driver (replaced by 1.6 Focus!) It does not idle and cuts out. Foot on accelerator keeps engine running and ticks over just when warmer. Where shall I start looking for the fault?
Lukey. 381
Is it obd1?

filtee 0
Clean your throttle body, maf and cam sensor. If it still does it, it maybe lambda sensor.
varr6pete 0
Fink I have found the issue! the plastic intake cracked and holed by throttle body allowing air into the engine. Explains why it will run at higher revs, but not tick over. Will need a replacement, will check this out at my local VW dealer tomorrow or look for a good used one!
Lukey. 381
Ford do the intake for cheaper for the galaxy VR6, the part no will be in the commonly used spare part numbers sticky thread.

MaidenVR6 26
It might be that your TB needs to be "adapted" with Vag Com. Sounds like a typical adaption issue.
varr6pete 0
Not there yet.....but have noticed my coolant sender (blue) is leaking, will need to change this anyway. Will a faulty coolant temperature sensor give the poor idling symptons. Is a VAG -Com a self contained fault reader or do I need to use software with my laptop???
varr6pete 0
Just purchased a U480 car diagnostic obd2 scanner as recommended by someone on this site, but just read its not for Golfs!!!Can anyone confirm this is correct. Still waiting for a reply from the supplier. Just been confirmed, this is not the one they recommend for 90's Golfs. UPDATE Have now purchased a Gendan t55, but a slip of paper included, says that if original radio is not fitted, (as radio is linked to cars diagnostics system) so may damage the scanner due to voltage going above 5 volts?. Email sent, await reply!!!!!ps Car socket - Pin 7 has 8.75 Volts with ignition on, Pin 16 has 12 volts all the time. I assume this pin powers the scanner.
varr6pete 0
Final update, fixed air leak, changed coolant sensor, still no joy. Used code scanner cleared historic codes (6 or so) engine fired up straightaway and idled! these guys were a great help, plus scanner will work on other cars too!!! also reads abs, air bags, air con etchttp://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGT55.html
