hi all why is it nearly every mk3 golf vr6 on a p reg has loads of rust but early model dont seem to rust

Haha I wish you were right. My j reg was covered. 6 holes in the floor. And sills gone

Apparently on the later years they used a slightly thinner metal, so it is more prone to rusting worse then some of the earlier models. Although the early ones have more years on them so tend to be just as bad!

Hi guys this mite sound like a stupid question but does any1 know wat metal and thickness the cars are made from ?? Ive got to do some repairs to mine and ive been told that ideally i wanna use the same type/thickness of metal. I was looking at 2mm sheet steel ??

Don't know exactly but it looks more like 1mm to me.

structural panels such as cills and a,b,c posts are usually thicker than door skins wings because thicker metal is harder to work with so thinner steel is used when more shape is in the panel .. ...

coat all the cavities and the backs of panels with wax oyl . . . help prevent further rust as welded panels are more likly to rust along the welds so make sure you protect the back side as well as the painted side,

I was referring to the outer panels with 1mm, I definitely used thicker sheet when I patched the floor.

The wings, sills and floor are all pathetic in terms of rust. I used to think VW made quality cars until I bought a collender with a 2.8 engine strapped to it.

The only redeeming feature about a Mk.3 Golf VR6 is the actual engine - all the bodywork is s**t, and most of the ancillary engine components are s**t as well.

Mines an N reg and I bought it with a little bit of panel damage to the drivers side and where the damage was where the only bits of rust were only because the paint had split. Thats all sorted now im just keeping my fingers crossed it'll not come back through
