golf vr6 ABS light on? (for a friend) update 7-12 fault code found!!!

hi guys a mate of mine has a golf vr6 1993, his ABS light came on yesterday and wont go out, its the light by the headlight switches.

any ideas what to look for? i suggested the abs sensors by the brake disks but they look ok by eye.

Obviously it'd be a lot easier if you got it on vagcom, but, try pulling the plug on the ABS unit for 20 mins and then connect it back up and going for a little drive.

cool i take it vag-com will say if its nearside or offside thats the problem?

the abs unit is on the right side of the engine bay isnt it at the rear by the bulkhead if i rememeber?

Under the expansion tank, but I think on OBD1 the unit and the ECU are separate and the ECU is under the rear seat. I don't know for sure though as I have OBD2. It will tell you which wheel has the issue.

yes the abs ecu is on the passenger side floorpan under the matt, same as my obd1 vr6.

update, had it on dianostic machine and this code came up -

00287 speed sensor rear right g44

cleared the code and it comes up again straight away, i take it this is another name for the abs sensor?? :-)

Yep, abs sensor rear right. Can be a easy to change or it can be a little more challenging. Use enough WD40/CRC

What you can do to be totally sure it's that sensor is to swap the plugs round and scan again to see if it now says the left sensor is the problem.
