Wilsonp83 1
HI all,My Golf VR6 Highline has just started this strange whining sound that gets louder and more high pitched as rpm increases. The car has done 127k and will probably (all being well) do another 3500 miles before the engine comes out for timing chains replacement, clutch and other opportunity bits.Initially, as the alternator was done less than 5k ago thought this must be either the power steer pump or aircon pump as they are on the same belt. However, I have come across a thread on here to do with the serpentine tensioner pulley??!!Now I'm confused! Also, I'm working away during the week now (away from my garage and tools). This means whatever I start at a weekend needs to be done for my drive back on a Sunday!!Any ideas? All help is greatly appreciated as always
craggsy 91
Yep sounds like the tensioner pulley. You undid it when swapping alternator. The bearing dries up and needs replacing
Wilsonp83 1
Cheers Craggsy.I didn't do the alternator as it happens. A garage relieved me of around £800 before I got my garage and tools sorted!!!Any advice on doing it? Any gen on this specific M8 threaded bolt?
Lukey. 381
Just a normal M8 bolt about 3inch long, wind it into the threaded hole on top of the tensioner and it will slacken the belt to get it off
