Batler182 1
Hi guys,I'm having a problem which I can't get to the bottom of. I've got a friend coming over tomorrow with vagcom to try and help but I thought I would ask here too. My golf is really rough on idle and throws out thick white smoke. I thought it would mean headgasket but that seem to be fine. The smoke stinks of petrol and there is petrol in the exhaust. It drips out. There's also a white liquid in the exhaust when it's running which turns black when you turn it off. I think it gets worse as it gets up to temp as it keeps cutting out. It had a supercharger chip in the ecu which got replaced for a standard map but things are still bad. Any ideas?
VR6Pete 1,455
MAF / Blue Temp Sensor / Lambda / temp sensors are usually your culprits here, however it would just be guess work until it has been on VAG-COM and you have monitored the measuring block and checked for fault codes. ssaunders 199
Hi mate, had same'ish issue, over fuelling no faults in vag com replaced all of Pete's suggestions, had black exhaust and real crap mpg all the time with rich exhaust, turns out it was dodgy thermostat. If you can vag-com it look for water temp settings as I believe they should change when the stat opens. My issue was stat half open and engine never getting properly warm and seemed to run on choke all the time (very slow to drop back to idle, ie stop at red light and idle would drop from 2K to 900'ish in minutes not seconds)MAF issues can be diagnosed with unplugging it and no change, blue temp sensor should be the same (unplug and no change) basically if they are disconnected default values apply, is yours ODB1 or 2? If 2 then you should be able to get a reading for the second lambda after/on cat I can't remember what the math is but you can determine Air/Fuel ratio from this. If your near me I have spare MAF to test with and vag-com if needed.Hope this is of use, good luck.Steve
VR6Pete 1,455
I notice you live in Congleton mate...I'm only up the road in kidsgrove and have VAG-COM if you need it plugging in, assuming yours is OBD2.
michael5556 247
He lives in ponyton near me. As above. Just try those things. Unplugging things. Etc.
Batler182 1
Yeah I unplugged the MAF and it doesn't change. The MAF looks brand new though. I got a spare one I think but I don't know if that's any good. It's obd2 with a 6 branch decat and shrick manifold. I need to update my location as Michael said I'm in stockport now hahaEdit- I only have a spare obd1 maf
VR6Pete 1,455
Ah ! I have an OBD2 MAF on my corrado you can probably test with but location wise, its probably better being near Michael! If there's no change, it's more than likely your MAF.
Batler182 1
I would love it if it is. A nice easy fix. Knowing my luck I doubt it would be that simple haha. I've used a lot of fuel yesterday just running it on tickover
Batler182 1
Is obd1 maf the 4 pin one?
Batler182 1
wait. Mines OBD1 because it's a corrado engine. I still get mixed up. I have the 6 pin maf on it. Is this right?
VR6Pete 1,455
Yeah mate, its 6 pin on corrado. I've not long sold my old MAF as I've converted my corrado to OBD2
Batler182 1
ok then cheers. Just a pain that gsf don't stock them and ecp are out of stock
michael5556 247
Sounds like maf to be honest. Or blue temp sensor from what you've told me. Check the wiring for the maf. You should get a proper obd port
Batler182 1
I've ordered a maf which is getting here tomorrow. My other one is still under warranty. You think it's the wiring for the maf rather than the sensor? It is a real obd port I think haha. Isn't the obd 1 port different anyway?
michael5556 247
Yeah I think they are all different. But yours is old Skool. Lol It could be. It's just a possibility on the wiring.
VR6Pete 1,455
How did you get on with this?
Daz... 0
I'm interested to know the outcome of this as mine seems to have the same problem.I've had it plugged into vagcom and it says the maf has a short on the positive but it still gives readings when the cars running. Woodyman84 3
i had my car run up on faul diagnostics when i was getting funny issues with maf and it was giving readings but occasionaly it was giving reading outside of the paramaters which is what made the car run so badlyso could still be the maf but wiring is always a possibilty just hard to diagnose
Daz... 0
Well I got mine sorted today, was the maf after all. Runs like a dream now :-)
