Trickygti 3 Posted May 28, 2013 Report Share Posted May 28, 2013 So I've got a bit of a timing issue with my engine so I thought I'd get it stripped down tonight, set the timing, and rebuild tomorrow with new bolts for the chain cover. Here's were it went pear shaped!Removed the top cover and found the upper chain tensioner guide wasn't straight? Also the tensioner itself wasn't flat on the end which I thought it should be?(excuse the crap iphone pics)Now the car is a 96 OBD 2 model and according to the engine number stamped on the block it's an OBD 2 block but as you can see its got a twin chain head, so is that an OBD1 head on an OBD 2 block? If so which chain tensioner and guide do I need as it looks like an OBD2 guide with an OBD1 tensioner? The part number on the tensioner is The engine number is 240420Any help would be great as I'm towing the car to work tomorrow to start removing the gearbox and replace the damaged parts. Trickygti 3 Posted May 28, 2013 Author Report Share Posted May 28, 2013 It's got Autotech 262 cams fitted with what I assume are early sprockets. I assume cams aren't OBD specific? Also does anyone know if it's got the right cam sensor pickup fitted to the sprocket? I've found a picture of an OBD2 chain setup on google but the cam sensor pickup wheel has about 4 cut outs on it. Has anyone got any pictures of their cars stripped down? arrrrgh my brain is fried tonight trying to work this damned engine out Link to post Share on other sites

UnitedMotorsport 55 Posted May 28, 2013 Report Share Posted May 28, 2013 The engine has been put together with the wrong tensioner bolt - that has caused the upper tensioner blade to twist.The 4 cut out cam trigger is from an extremely late OBD2 and depends on ECU code. I have NEVER seen one in a Golf/Corrado.The upper tensioner blade and bolt from the AMY engine can be fitted to the earlier duplex chained engines. Link to post Share on other sites
Lukey. 381 Posted May 29, 2013 Report Share Posted May 29, 2013 The AMY engine just uses the later type guide and bolt for the AAA.That is;021 109 507 B - Late bolt021 109 509 E - Late railOr if you want to make it single chain like it should be;021 109 503 F - Single upper chain066 109 570 - Single intermediate sprocket021 109 111 H - Single cam sprocket (need 2)N 102 038 03 - Cam sprocket bolt (need 2)If you're going to take the opportunity to renew the rear crankshaft seal while the box is off its about 50 quid from VW, ring a motor factors and get an Elring p/n 342.093.
