Rebirth of a VR6 - 1992 AAA Golf MKIII VR6

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

This is a poor, tired VR I picked up in October 2012. This little guy have run 308K kilometers, and is starting to feel it.

I picked him up for 10 000 NOK (Approximately 1200 GBP), and he have been standing still ever since (Started a couple of times a month, just enough to reach a normal temperature.

I had him tested at a local shop, and they found two A4-sized pages of faults with it - I am going to start out with the most vital ones. It's going to need new driveshafts, control arms, exhaust system, engine gaskets, timing chains/tensioners/rails etc.

The exterior does not look perfect either. Front bumper is broken, the paint job is "ok", the plastic is worn, etc.

Here is a couple of pictures from when I picked him up:

Had to wash it, because it was CRAZY dirty :-)

Until next month, I will not be able to do much. So much do be done around home :-(

Although, I have been shopping a lot of parts lately - I have picked up a complete 2.5" sports exhaust (stainless), brand new control arms, new driveshafts, complete gasket set and a complete timing-set.

First step will be to change the driveshafts and the control arms. This is because there are some ratteling noises which is supposed to come from a bad drive axle and/or a bad bushing. If the noises does not disappear, It's probably the gearbox or the inner drive knots that are broken.

When that issue has been taken care of, I will remove the motor from the car. Then, I will disassemble the top completely, replace every gasket and the timing chains/tensioners/rails. Later, I will "clean up" the engine bay, get rid of rust, paint the bay and change the exhaust.

Also, I will clean the engine pretty good (Is IronX any good for this?), and "freshen up" the plastic inside the bay.

When all of this is in place, the car is ready for the road.

Although, it would not hurt to improve the suspension a bit. (I'm thinking about coilovers, new ball joints and maybe new wheel bearings)

Anywho, this thread will come to a hault until next month - Can't wait for it though ;-)

He's a boy - He's got a towbar :-)

I have been looking forward to this for almost half a year!! :-)

Just bought him, put him in a garage, and started collecting parts. I would begin earlier, but my daily had to pass the periodic inspection (Every two years here in Norway - The car has to pass a test to be eligible for two more years on the road - Do not know if you guys have the same thing over the pond :-) ) It did, just last friday! :-)

So, I was at the garage the other day.. I was going to change the driveshafts and the control arms - But the control arms did not fit, and the driveshafts had slack in them!

I did not get to do anything (besides changing to summer wheels, and fixing the brake-shields - And taking it for a little 'spin' :)

Now I'll have to get hold of those poor people who sold me bad parts
