Lukey. 381 Posted July 20, 2013 Report Share Posted July 20, 2013 There's 3 main oils that you can try. You have to be certain that any you get are GL4 as GL5 will dissolve the brass in the gearbox. First is the fully synthetic version of VW gear oil, last time I looked it up it had a G52 code. Make sure its the fully syn for a 4motion though, the VR stuff is mineral. Second and third is redline MTL or MT90. MTL is 70w80 and is very good. MT90 is 75w90 so is a little bit thicker and is also very good. I looked up all kinds of shear tests etc when I changed mine and the 70w80 MTL most closely matched the viscosity and film strength of the VW stuff. I have used both redline oils and either will do the job, used MTL first time and gave MT90 a try this time. The capacity is just under 2 litres so 2 bottles of any will suffice.
