ChrisJ 1
I'm getting ready to replace my headgasket on my Golf VR6 and reading up as much as I can. I've seen the gasket 'kits' etc on ebay but wanted to go VW headgasket and bolts as I've heard some horror stories regarding the aftermarket stuff. Besides the oil, coolant filters etc, which other parts will NEED replacing? I'm just trying to work out whether it's better to buy one of these kits and bin the head gasket, or just get it all individually.. The parts I think need replacing are: valve cover gasket valve stem seals inlet gasket exhaust gasket Is there anything else and do all these parts definitely need replacing? I don't want to pour money into an £800 car but I want to do a half decent job at the same time! Cheers, Chris

VW head bolts are fine, I've got ARP bolts in mine Club Chairman
ChrisJ 1
Ah nice one, cheers for the heads up. Does anywhere in the UK stock these or is it an import job from America eBay? Can't seem to find any online advertised as Victor Reinz..
Lukey. 381
People have got them from Euro car parts but it can be a pot luck as to what you get. If you definitely want a Reinz the only sure way is VW, or you could be cheeky and go to your local branc and keep rejecting till they get it right lol. Just get a febi or elring head bolt set from euro car parts too for £25 or whatever it is now, a set of VW head bolts is about £120. If doing crank seal you will have to take the flywheel off so you'll need new flywheel bolts too, these are dealer only but only about £10 a set. Again don't get a VW crank seal they are horrendously priced, an elring is about £15. It's a good time to look at your clutch wear too if it will need it, seeing as you'll be right at it anyway, if its close to worn out you'll have to have the box back out to change it so makes sense. Get M8, M10 and M12 tri square socket bits as you'll need them for the driveshaft bolts, flywheel bolts and head bolts. If you aren't going that far with the crank seal and gearbox then the driveshaft and flywheel bolts but isn't necessary. And a torque wrench that will go from 0-110Nm if you don't have one as you'll want to get these important bolts like head bolts tightened up correctly.
