Therusterman 59
Looking to replace the front wheel bearings, noticed some play in one of them when I recently changed a cv boot. Is it also worth replacing the hub aswell? Also, when it comes to the make of the new bearings, I've seen some Febi/Bilstein ones, they usually make O.E quality stuff so thought they should be ok, or am i better off going to the dealer? Thing is I can't see a listing for the bearing on its own from VW. One last thing, any ideas where I can rent a bearing press, or do I just take the hubs to a garage? Nex 17
It makes life easier to change the hub at the same time buddy, dont have to get the old bearing off then and you can pick up a new hub for lik £30.Febi/Bilstein parts tend to be fine as far as l know and l would just drop them in at a garage to press on quick. Lukey. 381
Genuine bearing housings are £236 a side, I would strive to reuse them.
Therusterman 59
Sorry, didn't make my first post clear. Aim on re using the main hub body, its the splined rotor which the wheel bolts onto I'm considering replacing aswell. Is this the same bit you meant Luke? Was confident the Febi comments would be ok, just after a little assurance!
Nex 17
Yeah sorry l did not mean genuine is this what you meant buddy? http://www.amazon.co.uk/CORRADO-FRONT-WHEEL-1H0407613B-C357/dp/B00990AQIS
Therusterman 59
Yup, that's it! What do you think then, replace or reuse?
Nex 17
the few times l have done it l replaced them buddy, but the choice is yours
Lukey. 381
When you said pressing the bearing in I thought you meant item 7, if you mean 11 they are £96 for genuine.
Therusterman 59
Yeah that would be part #11. Hmmm, is there any benefit in replacing that part, or would just changing the bearing be sufficient?
Lukey. 381
You cant buy the genuine bearing all on its own, you cant even buy the full bearing kit #33 it was dropped not very long ago, you can still buy the full bearing kit for the base suspension golf just not the plus (GTI, VR6). But the list of parts included is identical, I would think you'd get 4 stud hubs though. Id just get SKF bearings and re use everything else. Maybe a new end nut #
Nex 17
yeah the bearing normally come with a new end nut to replace
Therusterman 59
Nice one, thanks for your help guys. One last question then, SKF or Febi?
Reaperx 181
Just take the full hub off and take to your local garage with a new bearing they shouldn't charge to much to press it in.
Lukey. 381
I like SKF
