Smelly Air con

After i use my Aircon it smells like a mouldy fridge for a while !ill

Is there anything i can clean to get rid of the smell.

probably a build up of nasty stuff, you should run your air con once a week to stop this from happening... i think it can be treated though, my uncle had it done on his mondeo...

I had the same on my A6 when I first got it. I think I just left it on for a few weeks and it cleared.

You have to change the filter, the pollen filter I think, I cant remember. I've same problem and have been meaning to change it. Its a build up of bacteria that causes it apparently

as pete said - you're sposed to run your aircon something like an hour a week to prevent it.

You can get a cleaner from Halfords or the like, you just put the ac on recirculate and spray an aerosol into the cabin.

I think Liqui Moly do a product for this that is sprayed into the evaporator. I have the same problem with the Climatronic on mine.

I took it to VW and they cleaned the system out. It lasted for about 6mths. I changed the pollen filter as well before but that really doesn't make much difference. Depends where the mold is and how best to treat it to really get rid of it and the problem.

Maybe a specialist Air Con plac would be able to help out!

"You should leave the a/c on all the time, even if not using it to cool the car. You should also turn the system to full cold for ten minutes once a week – even through the winter if you can – in order to circulate refrigerant which contains lubricants for the system and its seals. Then switch to full heat through the same pipes to thoroughly dry them out. This also blows out any moisture in the ventilation passages where mould and bacteria might be accumulating."

Anti Bacterial Deoderiser

If any customers complain of 'nasty smells' when the air conditioning is on, simply spray this foam like anti bacterial deoderiser into the heater/evaporator box (under the dashboard). The can is supplied with an applicator tube. This tube is used if you find it difficult to gain access to the heater/evaporator box. e.g the tube can be used up the evaporator drain

My cars got climatronic so i haven't got an a/c button, i noticed the aircon compresser runs all the time hot or cold unless i press the "Econ" button, which i usally do

I've always wondered whats the point in it being on when it blowing hot air ?

I've always turned it off to save a bit of petrol and power.
