young driver vr6 insurace

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I'm the owner of two golf vr6's, an auto I got given for nothing and a gti I converted to a manual vr6.

I have worked on these for the past few years and put a fair bit of money into each from my part time work, both are standard bar the exhaust systems ( both have magnex cat back systems )

The manual golf vr6 is coming up for renewal I paid £240 last year to insure it under my dads name and was able to be added onto the policy for 1 week as a learner driver for £40 which was great. However since passing my test back in April last year they haven't been able to repeat this and add me onto the policy for a week and now its coming to renewal there is no one who will do the same ( either insure me for 1 week,  or 1 year for my dad and add me onto the policy for 1 week every now and again )

I have tried Adrian flux without any luck ( £5,000 + to insure me for 1 year is all they could offer )

All local companies are saying I am too young, despite the fact I drove it as a learner.

I am 17 and passed my test April last year, will be 18 on march 1st.

Any helpful comments/advice would be appreciated as I really love the car and hate seeing it sat there when it could be used !

I'm not going to drive it like an idiot considering I've spent a lot of my own money on it and I like having my driving license.

As someone from the insurance industry I have to say £5k is a very good price!

Consider that it would normally cost well over £1k to a mum/dad with max bonus to insure a 1.0l micra for a 17 to drive, then factor in that you will be doing 100% of the driving in the car, then factor in the vehicle type, i really doubt you will get cheaper :(

As for everyone, buy cheap small engine cars that can be scrapped if damaged, build 3/4 years NCD up, get to aged 21, and you will be ok.

Sorry :(

Ouch. I had my first VR when I was 18, but I'm almost 30 now! All the "loopholes" I used back then have now been closed so it's going be tough for you! @sufforkvr6 has a good point and that's exactly what I did, but had a second car that sat in the garage building up NCB while I was driving my VR through my dad's policy, when I was 21 I was then able go at it alone but I know most companies don't do that anymore :(

From aged 18 I had a string of golf gti's, mk1, 2 8v 16v loads, nevr had an issue insuring them, used to be with co-op on an any driver policy.

Here's the thing, insurance companies never had to worry about break even, i.e it didnt matter as much if totl claims exceeded total premiums for all thier customers, because the insurer could invest that total premium and the interest/return of that investment would be substantial.

However, with the economic climate getting steadily worse, they now need to make an underwriting profit, i.e. total premium exceeds claims made.

Also factor in the" compensation culture" this country has adopted this adds premium!

Young drivers, especially male, are more prone to accidents! But crazy EU regs mean they can no longer rate male/female differently.

If insurance companies paid what peoples cars are worth instead of trying to give scrap or trade value all the time maybe people wouldn't feel the need to get compensation. My partner got hit from behind while stationary they offered her £250 for her car of which she refused so they told her to get comparisons I looked on autotrader found 2 cars similar mileage and age and condition for just over £1000 but they said no and showed her a crappy white one that was up for £350 no history high mileage no comparison. They paid her £350 so she then claimed whiplash and got another £1700 and all because they are tossers who cant pay the real value of a car.
